      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

[Solved] Pit Kilns

4 posts in this topic

Yes, another one.

So, I checked the wiki, double checked my setup and it's still not working. Here's what I have been doing:

Step 1 - Form the clay into what I want to fire. 2 Molds (stacked), 2 Vessels, and a Clay Jug.

Step 2 - Use a shovel to dig me a hole 2 deep, retrieve the dirt from the bottom and climb out. Be sure to close the sides so it's a 2deep/1wide hole.

Step 3 - Throw in my unfired clay.

Step 4 - Get 15 Straw . . . and be unable to place it. Stand there right-clicking and it refuses to place.

What am I missing here?

Edit: Solved. Though I find myself wondering if this task can be done a different way?

Ah. Given how Firepits are started with thrown sticks I assumed the pottery method was the same.

The reason that the pottery is placed instead of thrown like sticks is because the items are actually being kept track of to be fired, and not consumed immediately like the sticks. The firing process takes time, so if you just threw them on the ground the items would despawn before the process finished. One could argue that clicking on the thrown items with straw would create a fire-able block, putting the pottery inside of it; but how would you add more straw visually if it's already a solid block? It would also be very hard to code due to the vast variety of items that can be fired in a kiln (Unlike the fire pit where there is only two variations, with and without paper). The player also might try to throw in more than 4 items at once to fire, then what? Can you not place the straw then? Do the remaining items pop out the top after you place the straw? How does the game know which 4 of the pile to choose? The other problem with this solution is that the straw is supposed to burn away, so after firing, what is holding onto your items? Do they get thrown on the ground and despawn if you don't return to your pit within five minutes of the firing completion?

Placing the pottery solves all of these issues.

Pottery is also codded to be placed as a feature. Items can be stored in vessels and then placed on the ground, cleaning up the player's inventory before they have access to metal, and therefore chests.
