      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Does anyone else ignore the fact that clay floats?

5 posts in this topic

Being kind of picky here, but it always struck me as a cop out to just dig a hole into a clay deposit and not have to worry about shelter again for a while. I did it so much for a while that I now pretend clay doesn't float just so that my early game has more variance and challenge. As long as you can locate a clay deposit, your first night shelter is pretty much handed to you.

Think of it this way, clay has more structure to it than just regular soil or sand. The fact that you can form it and it will retain its shape is proof of this solidity. It doesn't fall into a loose pile like dry dirty or sand. You can also assume that there is a bit of moisture trapped within the clay-ridden soil, which further extends its rigidity.

Yeah, that makes sense. I just wish it didn't always defeat the purpose of thatch, cobblestone, and logs. I'm primarily viewing this from a PvP server perspective where everyone would gravitate to making hiddy holes in clay in order to hide their base from theft and trapping while they hoarded up initial resources, whereas otherwise they'd be restricted to building an exposed shelter on the surface 'til they get a pick.

To be fair, before clay was so common players would often do the exact same thing underneath the naturally generated boulders. And with the implementation of exposed caves in 78, the players are going to be able to hide in there as well.

Plus, you can make dig a hole, make a thatch roof, then cover it with a layer or two of dirt for the exact same effect
