      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Can't plant seeds. [Solved]

12 posts in this topic

I recently just turned a lake into a farm by placing dirt blocks and tilling them. However, when I try to plant crops in certain blocks none of the seeds will even plant. I've tried every kind of plant I've found (at least 2 from every nutrient class) and none of them will work. So I'm wondering if this has something to do with the type of soil (quartzite) I used. Can anyone confirm this?Edit: The real problem was the monster tree that I didn't realize grew out over my farm. Always look up folks.

dirt blocks that have been placed by the player need to sit for a month or so before you can plant in them.  Use a metal hoe to check the nutrient levels and when they are a block tall or so, start farming it.

Is the block properly hydrated and what is the temperature?

Tree overhead?  Plants need a view of the sky as well

It's most likely that there is a block above the farmland. Stand on it and look straight up, if you see anything but air you can't plant there.

This is incorrect. Dirt blocks that have been tilled will produce farmland that has no nutrients. You will still be able to plant crops on the block, they just won't grow.

Do trees block line of sight as well?

Also: Side note. I planted an acacia tree and the thing is monstrous, http://imgur.com/Us7Y1ui Is this a normal size for this tree? I've never seen one in the wild this large.

Yes, any block that is not air will block line of sight.

And that is the correct size for the acacia tree, which is why their saplings were removed in 78.10

So now I have to choose between cutting down an extinct tree or digging out an entire mountain off to the left to move my farm lol. Thanks for the help Kitty.

Will placed dirt blocks gain nutrients over time?

You need to wait until they become grass blocks and till those. Tilled dirt = no nutrient; tilled grass = full nutrients.

If you have already tilled the dirt, you can let it lay fallow for a season or two to let it regenerate nutrients though. So the correct statement would be

Dirt that was recently tilled = no nutrients

Grass that was recently tilled = full nutrients

Dirt that was tilled a long time ago = full nutrients

The regeneration of nutrients only happens once the block has been turned into farmland though. It does not matter how long a plain dirt block has been sitting in the world, if it was dirt and you just hit it with a hoe to turn it into farmland, the nutrients will all be 0.
