      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Spelunking vs. Tunneling for ores and minerals

9 posts in this topic

So I have been playing TFC for a while now but have run into a road block. I can't find the kaolinite or graphite needed for a crucible. So far my mining techniques are find surface ores and going cave exploring for veins. I have found massive veins of coal, tetrahedrite, borax, sphalerite, salt peter, and magnetite through my cave expeditions. Should I continue exploring caves for kaolinite and graphite?

I found my kaolinite and graphite by prospecting mountain bases on the surface. If you live on a layer that can contain them, there's probably a good chance to find traces of them somewhere.

There is a large chert mountain range and caver system in my game and the cavern is rich in coal, lead, gypsum, saltpeter, and borax. Should I switch to prospecting the mountain range?

Prospect on the right rock layers. Most graphite veins i find come from random prospecting in the correct rock types.

According to the wiki, chert can contain Kaolinite. You'll need a Gneiss, Marble, Schist or Quartzite mountains for Graphite.

Kaolinite seems to be the easy one, atleast for me, i keep finding tons of it mostly in claystone mountains and small surface canyons.

Graphite i havnt seen much of yet either, but i got lucky with a vien close to my house in a Marble mountain, making me think i got lucky on finding loads of Kaolinite aswell :P

Id say venturing around mountains is a good tactic since its in the top layers (Sedimentary (acording to the wiki)).

so i found my kaolinite but now I am trying to find graphite. I am in a major marble cave system but still nothing, should I try to find a mountain consisting of the stone that graphite is common in instead?

Try to find a mountain instead, because there should be an entire layer of the stone that can contain Graphite. Do some prospecting on the surface around those areas.
