      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Improved hunger mechanics upon waking

13 posts in this topic

Sleeping for long enough, and with a sufficiently-empty stomach, can result in death by starvation immediately upon waking. This is mostly an annoyance, but it's also unbelievable because it's not true to real-life body mechanics.

Currently the game seems to assume the body depletes its hunger at the same rate overnight as while awake, and catches up immediately upon waking. IRL, one rarely goes to bed on a full stomach, and one's body not only uses less energy during sleep than when awake, it also takes time to become hungry in the morning after its fast (although hunger, when it does come, sometimes has a rapid onset).

There are many possibilities for improved implementation details, but here are two examples:

  • Deplete the hunger bar by the same amount as currently, but at ½ to ¼ of the current rate.
  • Immediately deplete the hunger bar by ½ the current amount, plus an additional ½ at the slowed rate.

#2 would better simulate real-life reduced energy consumption overnight, plus the phenomenon of delayed but somewhat brisk onset of hunger at breakfast. But any change that makes it less likely that you'll die faster than you can switch to your food would be more believable IMO.

We were talking about this in IRC the other day, and the idea had come up that you simply wouldn't be able to fall asleep if your hunger was low enough that sleeping through the night would kill you.

I had the same problem and I like Kittychanley's solution. It reminds me of real life (those darn late-night cravings...)

I like the simple, elegant solution of not sleeping if your hunger bar would result in you taking damage.

Not being able to sleep is a great idea—although my point about losing less hungerbar while sleeping than while awake still stands.

But let's say you have really low hunger bar, and you go to sleep. Then you can still die the moment you wake.

Losing less hunger makes the possibility of starving to death while you sleep a lot less possible, but the fact remains that it can still happen

Your solution is funny. I make a game based on credibility, and your house will jump up in the sky if you leave your windows open. Solution: don't leave them open. What?

Does the sleep use percentage of the food? is there an understandable bar for "you are hungry"? Nope, there's a bar, which shows something. No rumbling stomach, do you even have any effect which shows you "Man, you'll DIE, if you don't eat"? I don't remember a thing. Or even a warning for "You're so hungry, you can't sleep".

I meant that I agree, Kitty's idea is great and should be implemented in addition to making hungerbar deplete less while sleeping.

Oh. oh.

I get it. I misunderstood. woops

So your food decreases slower when you sleep, and when you're too hungry, you can't sleep.

sounds good

I think both got implemented right now, judging by the changelog

The slowed hunger was implemented, the not allowing a player to sleep from being too hungry was not. The sleep restriction was not implemented so that players who are low on hunger, and have monsters between where they currently are and their food, they can still sleep through the night so that the monsters will burn in the daylight, and then they can make it to their food when they wake up before they starve to death.
