      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Slow building

6 posts in this topic

TFC needs to slow down building. It is too easy to chop down some trees and make a cabin in the first night, and once you make a shelter, you feel instantly safer. I think placing blocks should take time, so you need to invest in a shelter. Perhaps when you place a block, some kind of placeholder or progress bar appears, which you can let finish or cancel. This way, it takes a whole lot of time to build up a town, and you have a great sense of reward from even the simplest structures.

hmm, i definitely see what you are saying. But i think that it might make the game no longer feel like minecraft. i have also never played DF which TFC is supposed to be based upon, so maybe thats something that is in DF. nevertheless, i like the idea but i think it would just add tediousness to the game that isnt needed

Perhaps. I'm just throwing in the idea. I do want it to feel like an accomplishment to make a shelter rather than just a few clicks.

It's all about a balance though. Realism vs Fun. If it would make the game less fun, scrap it; but if it works, I'd like a slower or more rewarding feeling of building.

i can see that, and i feel that the cobble being affected by gravity made it slightly harder to build your first shelter, but then again you can just shift click the logs and make a quick inexpensive building. maybe up the required amount in a log pile to actually create your house, but that only effects your first shelter, and everything else not so much.

that aside, i think that making building be like it is now, with support beams everywhere so it doesnt fall until its finally complete.

DF is amazing (I just dusted it off from over a year of not playing it and it got me hooked again!) I had to learn it all over again though since I'd forgotten the mechanics. But in DF, 1 tree = 1 wood. That 1 wood can be used to build an entire workshop. Same with digging into the stone. You pick up a rock that was broken away from digging and that 1 rock can build 1 block of wall that can keep friends in or enemies out.

I really like the idea of having to build a frame. I think the mechanics of the supports would have to be changed though since horizontal supports can't be placed without a block above it (unless something changed since I last played). Although a single block of support would need to support up to 2 blocks in all directions otherwise every wall in your house would have a support running up it and your ceiling would be all support blocks.
