      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Charcoal pit help!

8 posts in this topic

I'm trying to build a charcoal pit. Before I've done a simple 2 high, 3*3 charcoal pit, but now I'm trying to make a 3 high, 5*5 charcoal pit. I have 2 questions before I sit here and wait a fairly long time trying to make it work (at the moment, I've made it and lit it, just no smoke is coming out of the dirt blocks on the top layer, so I'm not sure if it's working)

Does this actually work?

If it works, are there any special requirements for it?

(Not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions)

From the wiki:

The Charcoal Pit is constructed by creating a covered structure of Log Piles as large as 25 blocks wide, 25 blocks long and 13 block high and lighting it with a fire pitNote: Only full log piles can have another log pile placed on top of them, so plan the height accordingly. The smallest version of a charcoal pit is a log pile with at least 4 logs inside on top of a fire pit.

So your structure is far from the maxumum allowed.

One caveat is that the log pile immediately above the fire pit must be "relatively full" - whatever that means.

It used to be the case that there had to be a log pile on all sides of the fire pit but it seems that has been changed.

For as far as I can tell, if your fire pit is on the lowest level it shoud work. Maybe check you have particles turned on?

Is the structure a block or pyramidal? If the latter, try first a base of 5x5 with the 2nd layer 3x3.

The charcoal pit doesn't have to be pyramidal in shape. Technically it doesn't have to be any specific shape as long as it fits within the max size, and all the log piles are touching.

The pyramid shape on the wiki is just the old nostalgic version, so a lot of veteran players make it that shape. Plus it looks nice. :)

Thanks, forgot to say that it did work well. And Kitty, if it can be any shape within the size with all logs touching, can I make an upside down pyramid? That would be great :D

I just tested, and yes you can make an upside-down pyramid, but it takes a lot of extra work because log piles have to be placed on top of solid blocks, or on full log piles. You'll also have to keep in mind that the undersides of those log piles need to be covered too. If any side of the log pile is exposed to air, it will go up in flames.

Thanks for the info, I always did the pyramid shape, did not know I could do with other forms.  :)
