      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Almanac

5 posts in this topic

This is something that a meticulous player can do anyway, but it would be very nice to have an easier and more immersive way to accomplish it.  I think it would be awesome if there was a way that a player could create an in-game almanac.  This could make use of paper and ink, or a chisel and stone (there's lots of ways to write things down...ask Moses).  Anyway, the purpose of the almanac would be to store seasonal data, such as maximum and minimum temperatures, thereby giving the player relevant information for the next year (assuming that there is some kind of general continuity between years).

Another function of an almanac could be to help with breeding animals.  The almanac could be used on a given animal to name that animal and then display any relevant information.

What I like about this idea is that such an almanac could be adjusted as the game develops to provide new information as it becomes relevant, such as the other inheritable traits in the works.  Of course it might make sense to separate these two ideas into separate books...an almanac and a livestock ledger.  Either way, I would find these kinds of things very helpful.

I find it kind of ironic - you've just suggested some immersive way of writing down temperatures which knowledge of would be breaking immersion. Given the lack of in-game temperature measurement devices, you can only depend on F3 for that which is not meta.

But beside that thing, I don't mind it much. Actually, TFC had ability to simply write books in the past, but because of certain issues it was taken out if I recall correctly. Just wait a bit, one day it may get fixed and work well and probably we'll get it back then. That coupled with ability to make wooden signs would be everything regarding writing down informations in game I'd really need.

I am less fond of using almanach on animals or generally, as anything less than actual notepad though I guess such kind of function could be useful at times without being much of a problem, especially if we'd get more crafts requiring identification and fluid combination of ingredients (say, alchemy or herbalism which could work not unlike cooking does as ability to automatically write down all kinds of recipes and their effect, with illustrations and whatnot I find rather appealing).

I am doing it with signs aswell, was thinking of making a book, I hope its not disabled on the version I use (1versions older than current live).

I think the Idea of a cooking recipe book is nice :D We already have an in game calender, it would be nice to maybe expand it by placing a book somewhere? then you could add notes, and see exact date and time when you wrote it. (see it as expanding the crafting grid from 2x2 to 3x3 by placing a craftingbench in the 2x2, but then with the calender, placing a book somewhere in a slot there that adds an option for notes, if you would die the book would drop and you could try to get it back, it might also be funny to find the dead body (and his notebook!) of somebody else and use it to your advantage :P

I like this idea. I don't think knowing temp is breaking immersion. We need numbers because we are not there to feel temperature. I would be happy with qualifiers like Hot Warm Chilly etc. that represent ranges of degrees. I might even like that better than numbers. That should be divorced from an almanac and be displayed at all times, since it is a basic sensation.

Perhaps the almanac could be a container which houses crafted measuring devices. Thermometers, barometers. While on your inventory, the almanac could display relevant data on your HUD. As time goes by, seasonal changes could also be revealed (highs and lows).

Maybe even record biome and rock layer data. And as agriculture skills increase, relevant growing data displayed.

Sounds intensive, but it's not much more than adding widgets which display already known F3 info. Mostly.

+1

Instead of hitting F3, I would MUCH rather have a general temperature indicator such as Sweltering,Hot, Warm, Chilly, Cold, Freezing, Are-You-Stupid-Coming-Out-In-This-Weather.

F3 is immersion breaking for me but I have to use it sometimes like spring planting. Just because there is no ice on the pond, I still need to know whether it is 0.5 degrees (not safe to plant) or 8.5 degrees (probably safe to plant.)
