      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

how to find the right ore when you get two ore readings

4 posts in this topic

On my world i am trying to find copper. Everytime i get a reading, i get a conflicting reading of another ore and it gets almost impossible to find the copper. Any tips for this?

Sorta depends on the situation of the two ores.

Usually if the copper reading comes up as large or very large, just triangulate and grid search the rock until you find it. All you really need to find are the point where the prospectors pick has a reduced reading for copper.

If it's small, or medium it can be very hard to find. especially when it's beside a jet or coal source (the most conflicting ones for me).

In the end to find most of the ores you will have to do grid based mining anyways (I like using 2x1 tunnels two blocks apart in all directions) so finding the surface copper will almost be guaranteed.

Well, if you've got ladders, try going deeper immediately.  Unless the two ores are at almost exactly the same level (which shouldn't happen I don't think), at a certain depth, one of them should lessen significantly.  That will let you know which of the ores is closer to the surface.

I'm never quite sure what is and isn't forbidden knowledge so I won't say much, but I know that certain ores (or minerals) are very likely to be found together in TFC. As in intermingled, the same vein. Good examples are Bismuthimite (bismuth) and Limonite (iron), or Magnetite (iron) and lignite (coal). I am unsure this is intentional coding, or purely coincidence in my experience.

However I do know that any two or more minerals/ores found in the same rock types can and will form in veins in the same location. Unless this has changed since B75 (citation needed)
