      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Astronomy/Calender!

9 posts in this topic

Astronomy (and calender's) helped towards farms back in the really old days, like 2000 B.C., and ancient Mesopotamia, and Sumeria. They used the moon and calculated years by astronomical observations, and if you were to be able to build a telescope, then you could receive info like when to plant or when animals will come for a great hunt. Some tiers of the telescope would go as follows, but also you need glass for lens and mirrors.

First you have to develop these:

>Stonehenge

>Sundial

>Water Clock

Then you actually are able to advance to telescopes:

>Tube Telescope

>Refracting Telescope

>Reflecting Telescope

>Dobsonian Telescope

Thanks for your time!

Ok, this is a big one. Stonehenge?? How are we supposed to use/create such a thing?

The sun dial and water clock, on the other side... I see it as two blocks that you place in the ground.

Sun dial could be created with three planks or stones and a stick, and maybe requiring a saw or a chisel, stick in the middle block, the rest in the lower row. Then you place it and it orients itself in the right position, no mather where you are looking to. Then, when you walk to this block and look into it, an overlay text showing the time appears on screen, and/or the block texture shows somehow the time.

The water clock, as I see, it's a count down device. You load it with one or more water buckets, and it slowly counts down. Maybe it allows to place more than one bucket, translating in different time spans ( 1 bucket = 1 minute, max 5 buckets? ).

I'm not really sure what the point of a sundial would be, to be honest. Any place a sundial would work is also a place where I could just look at the sun itself and immediately know the time of day by where it is in the sky and which direction it is moving. Things like stonehenge are interesting, but we'd need to have a year-cycle in place first, rather than just the day/night cycle as it is now.

As for the advanced telescopes -- what would they do for you? Their real-life purpose is to gain information about other planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, etc, all things that are not very relevant to the minecraft/TFC world. I'm not sure what information you'd gain from them that would be useful for hunting or farming. That said, a small 'Galilean' stye tube refractor that you could carry with you might be both fun and practical, allowing you to see things more clearly at a distance. If you've used optifine you might be familiar with the zoom-in key. I'd love to have a small handheld telescope that does that. :)

I do like the water clock idea. Perhaps even some small device analogous to the vanilla MC clock that you can carry on your person and allows you to know what time it is, even when underground. It's nice knowing if it is safe to return to the surface without having to actually look outside first.

Well knowing what time of year it is would help for when to plant some types of food, and when prey will be migrating. Though I guess you would have to have a year cycle... hmmm....

do not suggest a growing cycle I would very much prefer to be able to actually survive even if it took like four days to grow wheat by then I would have died multiple times or be running around like a savage attempting to kill and eat raw meat. That sounds entertaining but it would get extremely boring after doing once or twice. I however do like the idea of foliage changing color with season, weather changing, animal behavior changing, small stuff like that that would look nice or add depth nothing that would make the game more difficult. (sorry for the rage no one said it but someone was thinking it  whoever it was I'm watching you)

Lol, I see your point, and that same rage happened to me when someone suggested torches that burn out!

As far as I am aware a large part of the reason for this mod being crated was to add a challenge and more realism to what is currently a very easy game.

I look forward to the challenge an so would have to disagree with you.

You can still grow crops out of season, but it's harder and you have to provide more for them to get them to grow. I.e. crops need more light, more heat, more nutrient, etc. I would like it to get harder actually, I want raw meat to rot after a day, and I want cooked meat to rot after a week if it isn't preserved with salt or some other method.
