      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Cave ins very rare? (even though changed cfg?)

9 posts in this topic

I always thought cave ins weren't common enough and wanted more challenge.

So I upped the chance again and again - it's now meant to be 1 in 2 - 50%.

However I still rarely see any cave ins, it feels like the default value is still in play.

I can dig long 1 by 3 tunnels to walk through and barely ever see a cave in.

Below is in my .minecraftconfigTFCOptions.cfg

Is there something else that could be overriding this file?

Any ideas?

"cavein options" {    # This number is a 1 in X chance that when you mine a block, a collapse will occur.    I:initialCollapseRatio=2    # This is the minimum number of solid blocks that must be over a section in order for it to collapse.    I:minimumRockLoad=1    # This number is the likelihood for each block to propagate the collapse farther.    I:propogateCollapseChance=60}

I've been looking at BlockCollapsable.java for a little while and I can't see anything wrong with the CollapseRatio check, which happens every time you mine a "collapsable" block. (collapsible is the correct spelling :P). There is some tweaking for rock type and seismic activity that might not work right due to integer casting, but if anything it would make cave-ins more likely. With your intialCollapseRatio set to 2, it looks to me like you should be seeing guaranteed collapse in sedimentary rock, so long as you are mining blocks that are not supported.

Keep in mind that 'supported' includes both crafted support and natural support. If you are digging a 1x3 tunnel, the only way you would ever see a collapse is if you mined the top block last. edit: actually that's not true. After thinking for a bit, I don't think digging a 1x3 tunnel will ever cause a collapse.

Collapse propagation seems to be currently disabled. Most of the implementation is commented out.

Is it mining an unsupported block, or mining the underside of a block?

Ah right so different rocks have different chances then?

I came across that thread when searching but it didn't seem to reveal much.

I wonder if it's the way I'm digging or something then, although in testing I was digging any old how and it seemed to still not cause cave ins.

I'll always take out the top block of a stack first, closest to the 'roof', I assume that means there's only a chance for 1 collapse?

The block that you are mining has to be unsupported in order for a chance to cave in. In order for a block to be considered "unsupported" it has to have a 3x3 of air blocks underneath it. If the block that you are breaking doesn't have that space, it isn't going to cave in.

When you are mining and taking the top block out, that block has a stone block under it, so it is supported and won't cave in. Then if you mine the middle block next, it also has a stone block under it, so it is supported and won't cave in. Finally you remove the bottom block, which has a stone block under it and is therefore supported and won't cave in. So with the current method that you are using, there is no  chance for a cave in at all.

Since you turned up the config option, I suggest going into a large cave, and mining one or two blocks out of the ceiling. Since those blocks actually have a lot of space underneath them, they aren't supported and can therefore cave in.

The whole danger of cave ins is when you are mining an unsupported ceiling, or a block with air underneath it. If you are just digging into the walls and none of the blocks you mine have a big space under them, there is no risk of cave ins at all really.

Edit: Pictures for clarification:

The if the black wool block was stone, it could cave in when mined because it has a 3x3 of air underneath it.

When making a 3x1 tunnel, you can mine the brown, white or orange block in any order and there will not be a cave in. The brown wool is supported by the white and light blue wool. The white wool is supported by the orange and purple wool. The orange wool is supported by the ground. So even if you mined the orange and the white wool first, the brown wool is still supported by the light blue wool, and will therefore never cave in.

Is it mining an unsupported block, or mining the underside of a block?

Mining an unsupported block is what triggers the cave in. It does not matter which side of the unsupported block you are mining. The only reason that cave in happens more often when mining the underside of the block is because that is the only side accessible when mining a flush ceiling, which is the most common time that cave ins happen.

That is an awesome explanation, thanks!

That definitely clears it up for me, and I'm sure for others too.

ps. Is it right for it to crash setting the chance to 1 in 1? lol

Added..

Strange just had a cave in when I'm sure by those rules I shouldn't have.

Diagram looking horizontal - all X,A and Z blocks are Basalt rock, spaces are air.

I dug out block A, and block Z turned to cobble and fell that 1 block down?

Yeah. Kitty is talking nonsense.

This is how it works:

  • Every time you mine a stone block, a chance happens
  • If chance happens, check 3x3 horizontal blocks around the one you mined and check if it can fall (eg. it has free space under it)
  • If suitable block is found, use this block as epicenter for the cave-in
  • Then, the cave-in propagates with probability across all blocks in horizontal directions, that can fall down. If there is air in the place, the cave-in propagates upwards. But never down.

So if the ceiling you are mining into is kind of jagged up/down, the cave-in will have hard time propagating and will cease after 2-3 blocks. This is usually what happens when you mine ores. But if you mine into actual cave, which generally have smooth ceilings, you can expect half of the cave falling on your head. Also, it generally makes one layer of stone fall, so you won't get suffocated by the cobble. Just little bit of damage from it falling on top of your head. It is possible that multiple layers will fall, but I guess it is too rare of an occurrence.

There is no "support" other than support beams.

At least thats how it works in current version. Not sure if 79 made any changes to collapsible block. And there is actually method hasNaturalSupport, that does what Kitty says. But this method is never called.

Ah yes that makes more sense now reading it again, and fits my example perfectly.
