      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Prospecting Pick.

3 posts in this topic

Hey guys,

Perhaps this might be a bit of a silly question, i tried to find the information i wanted to know, but all i could find on the Pro Pick is how to use it and the radius it works with.

The thing id like to know is what determains the readings of traces - small - large - very large.

The reason im asking is cause i had some issues locating ore, despite the fact that i looked up many tutorials and wiki pages related to it. I had this one vien of bismuth that kept saying small, so i converted that world into creative for the sake of research. And saw that the vien i was looking for was only 3 ores (or 4 cant recall but not more) in size, and the tunnels i made where actually 1 block away from the ores in question.

Taking the previous explanation into account id say the pick also looks at how many ores there are with in the radius it uses, so the question basicly comes down to how many ores determain the readings. Would be nice to know and to be noted on the wiki, so we can determain more easy if its worth looking for a certain deposit/vien early game or maybe move onto a other location.

Thanks in advance for any information on the matter.

I'll just answer this now to clear up any confusion. First: the pro-pick doesn't use a "radius", per se. The 12 block range equates to a scan area of a 25x25x25 space with the block you click on at the very centre.

The reading you get back will either be a false negative or will count the number of blocks within that scan that are ore blocks of whichever type that block will tell you (there may be multiple ore types in the scan, but the one it displays will be random)

The level (traces, small, medium, etc) is exactly related to the number of ore blocks located in the scan. Traces could be as few as 1 block, large is much higher. They are discrete, so they never overlap. A medium sample is at LEAST 1 greater than a small sample.

I won't give you the exact numbers, but I will say that "very large" has no upper limit, every number above a certain value is considered "very large"

I had not included this information on the wiki page for the propick because I had assumed it was obvious.

To use a prospector's pick, right click on any block to get a reading. Possible results are: Found nothing of interest. Found traces of, Found a small sample of, Found a medium sample of, Found a large sample of, Found a very large sample of, and Found.

Nothing of interest means nothing there or a false negative. Traces means only a tiny bit of ore in the area, small means a bit more ore in the area, etc etc up until very large meaning there is a lot of ore in the area.

I'm not quite sure how this could be interpreted any other way. A reading of "very large sample of" wouldn't believably correlate to only 1 or 2 ore blocks in the area.

As Dunk stated, we will not be providing the exact numbers behind each reading. The readings given in the game are more than enough to determine relative size and if you want to continue pursuing the vein or not.
