      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Smoothstone?

16 posts in this topic

I'm sorry, but I'm new and I don't have any idea how to make cobblestone into smoothstone... I tried smelting at highest temperature in forge and a fire pit. No success.

Also, how rare ore is? Because currently, I'm at 80-90 depth and I haven't still got any ore. Went past limestone layer at 90.

i didnt know it exactly but i believe to read somewhere that u have to use the chisel on the stone BEFORE you gather it. So chisel on the stone and than swing your pickaxe. Its like i say just a rumor

Thanks for the help, but I figured it out. You have to mine all blocks supporting a stone block. So, then it gives you a normal stone block instead of cobble. It makes sense now, when you think about it.

Yes mining around a block gets you STONE. Chiseling a block before you mine it gets you SMOOTH STONE. Lets say we're talking about granite. The method of mining around it to make it fall off will get you granite. Chiseling it first then mining it will get you smooth granite. In TFC the smooth variety of stone is the kind that you chisel first. Its not like vanilla where the kind of stone that looks like the kind that you originally mined is called smooth stone, it's just the regular type that was there instead of cobble. My point is that a stone anvil is not made of smooth granite (or other stone), it's just made of granite. The smooth stone (chiseled before mining) is only for building right now and is not used in any recipes.

I just wanted to clear this up because I think that people who are new to TFC might get confused if they read people saying that smooth stone is used in recipes when it is not. Trying to make an anvil or metalurgy table out of, lets say, smooth granite, will result in failure.

Again..... Smooth stone is the stuff you chisel BEFORE you mine it and is for decoration only. STONE is used for anvils, not smooth stone.

Actually, you can use the chisel in the comfort of your own base. You can craft it with cobblestone to give you the appropriate type of smooth stone. However, you must use the other method in order to get plain stone for an anvil, because you can't make a chisel without your first anvil.

As for Jointertrons post, yeah, every one of the 12 or so stones have plain, cobble, smooth, and brick versions. Only some of these can be used for anvils, so pay mind to that when you are getting plain stone for one. (I don't think Rock Salt or Mudstone works well for smithing :P)

Chisel -> Turns plain stone into smooth stone (Or cobble into smooth stone from a crafting window)

No

Clarification of how this works:

RAW stone is acquired by mining out the adjacent blocks.

Right clicking with your chisel on RAW stone changes it to SMOOTH. Then you proceed to mine it out and retrieve it.

BRICKS are made via crafting cobble with your chisel.

I propose prefixing the raw stone with the word raw or rough

That method of getting smooth stone doesn't work in build 60, is there an alternative way to get smooth stone?

This method still works. To get smooth stone you need a chisel. Right click a rock (You mustn't break it, it must be natural) and it changes texture, then mine it. Remember to use the smooth mode of your chisel.

Remember to use the smooth mode of your chisel.

And to have a Hammer in your hotbar....

I Know it should be quite obvious, but the first time I tried to use my chisel, i made that mistake, took me a couple of minutes to figure it out...
