      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I can't seem to get enough food. Any help?

8 posts in this topic

I was following the 'no nonsense' guide on the wiki, but I couldn't find enough food to sustain myself. Most of the berry bushes and fruit trees were not ripe yet, and the few that were just weren't enough. I could only find around 5-7 fruits/ vegetables. I'm using a seed that was on this forum and other people recommended as well, so other people could find enough food.

Well, I have not played the new build yet but may I suggest one food source people forget, even in vanilla Minecraft.  If you can get string may I suggest fishing?  It is renewable, you can salt or cook them, and as long as there is water you can fish for more.  Could hold you over till you can find those animals or start that farm.

Fishing is a valid solution... if you are at the metal stage of the game as you need plank to make the crafting table to unlock the 3x3 crafting area.

What I did is run to find crop, harvest when I need food only and replant the seed right away. Never ran into a food shortage. I was lucky and spawned in a warmer climate, with jungle around me so I do not have to worry about cold temperature destroying my farm.

The key to early survival in TFC is to just keep moving. You need to keep running around in search for food, rocks, sticks and straw for as long as you can. The first priority is finding any food so that you don't starve the first night, after which you can focus a bit more on rocks, sticks and straw to build a shelter to get through the night. Even after you've survived the first night, you should still be out exploring for more food. If the only thing you are eating is wild crops and fruit, you're going to have to explore a lot more, since they don't give you very much to eat. Ideally you'll want to find a wild animal that you can kill for meat. Once again, this still requires exploration because if you kill all the animals in the area, they aren't going to come back.

A renewable food source also takes quite some time to get in TFC: you can only get fruit in certain seasons, crops take a while to grow, and animals are pregnant for a long time before giving birth. Until you have an established farm for crops, berry bushes, and fruit trees; your primary source of food is probably going to be meat. Try to keep at least one of each gender alive for animals that can be bred, but if they cannot be bred (deer, pheasants) go ahead and slaughter them to eat. A single deer is probably going to drop enough venison to feed a single player for like a month in game, as long as they tend to it properly to avoid it rotting. Also keep in mind the rot when you kill any animal for meat; only kill when you need to, because meat stays fresher for infinitely longer when the animal is still alive.

TL;DR - Just keep walking around until you find a whole bunch of wild crops, or an animal to kill when first starting out. Finding food is your first priority over everything else.

Meat is the key... kill one animal and you will get enough for a while. I'm in January now and still have a little bit of the pork from the pig I killed on one of my first days. You will want to cook it and store it in vessels as soon as possible to minimize decay and then store most of the vessels in a dark place when you can. You will find tons of fruits and vegetables once you start prospecting... that requires you to wander all over the map pretty much. Grain is a lot harder - at least in my seed. I have not found a whole lot of that. Not sure if that is just the way grain is or if I am unlucky.

I found it is kind of difficult to get crops going for the first season... I planted any seeds I found but did not get much from them before winter came. I'm sure the second year would be better since you can start in spring time. But even with mininal crops I still have plenty of food, and there are still loads of animals around my house that I could kill if I needed to.

I just started the new build tonight and MEAT is the key.  Make some jars, cook the meat, place it in the jars, dig a hole, place jars in hole and cover with straw.  I found that the cooked food in the jars in the dark show little decay over a few days while the food I am carrying quickly decays.

As others have said: Kill an animal and cook it asap. It will last you until you can find an alternate source of food. Putting the food inside a Ceramic Vessel will make it last longer.

Another thing to note is that when you eat a selection of food, you eat some of the decay too. So eat your most rotted foods first.
