      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

[Solved] Wolf Breeding

7 posts in this topic

Is wolf breeding currently enabled? I am able to heal my male and female dog/tamed_wolf with raw meats but they do not enter "love mode". They have also been together now for at least a year (in game) and the female is not pregnant so ruling out passive breeding.

Also on the topic of breeding can pheasants be bred or are they just game animals for now? Can't wait to see more fowl if they're in the works :D

My appologies btw if this is a common question, google only returns old topics (more than a year old).

^ Literally still on the front page of this subforum.

You need to use raw mutton, beef, or pork if you want to breed, and the animal must be full. Just keep feeding them until they stop eating, or you see heart particles. Also try different combinations of the male and female sitting and standing.

Deer and pheasants are wild animals that cannot be bred or tamed.

I actually see this as being a problem, because raw meat decays even faster than fruit it seems.

Cannot be pickled, brined, smoked, or dried.

Which means you have no way to store it and feed your wolves, further made worse by it only being domestic animal meat.

well, unless you intend on having a puppy mill, you'll probably only be breeding them once a year or so, so it shouldn't be terribly hard to find an animal to kill.

While I see your point dunk, the amount of work you put into growing and storing food in general makes this part of it a logistical nightmare. And I am not talking about a puppy mill, im talking about 2 puppies in a year, it feels like a waste of a whole animal to me i guess.

And I refuse to put a refer in the sky because i feel its an exploit.

Domestic animals do not respawn if I remember correctly.

I guess to balance this it would have been easier to nerf the wolves somehow if you guys are afraid of someone getting a bunch of wolves. Because as scavengers, wolves do not just eat fresh raw meat.

Uh, you realize that you don't familiarize puppies by feeding them raw meat, right?

The only thing you need raw meat for is to get the female pregnant. You can feed them cooked meat to regenerate health, and you familiarize them by petting, not feeding.

There's a bunch of misconception here actually, so let's clarify. I'm currently looking through the code and confirming each of these statements as I write them.

You start the taming process of a wild wolf by giving it bones. Once the wolf is yours, you familiarize it by petting (right click while sneaking).

To breed wolves, it must be familiar, and you must feed it one of the following items: Pork, Beef, Mutton, Horse Meat.

As of 79.0, meat of all versions (Raw, Cooked, Salted, Brined, etc) is contained within a single item using different NBT flags.

Wolves have no way of reading NBT tags. To a wolf, your raw pork chop is the exact same item as a cooked salted one. All the wolf cares about is that it is pork.

In order for wolves to regenerate health, they must not be hungry. Hungry wolves can be fed the same food as for breeding, or they will kill nearby livestock if they are not 100% tamed and are hungry.
