      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Saw / wood blocks & breaking speed

5 posts in this topic

As we know axes are for felling trees and saws are more of a crafting tool for construction, I thought of another use for the saw. Wood blocks take quite some time to break which is fair enough to cut a tree, but when it's just one block or part of an artificial structure it gets tedious. If TFC can differentiate between player-placed logs and tree-logs, I suggest the saw can break player-placed logs quicker. If that sounds too easy for TFC, maybe break the log into planks? Sawing is easiest done on the ground anyway. This leads my brain onto the topic of thatch, it's a very useful block for temporary structures and mining etc, but I feel it takes too long to dig up since no tool does it faster. Could we have a tool to break it faster, or shred into straw again if you didn't want things too easy? Tilled soil really needs a tool to break it faster, amazingly I didn't see anything when searching for "tilled"

As far as I know saws do break player placed logs faster

Actually the knife breaks the thatch block rather quickly, I believe it is the tool suggested for picking up thatch and I've noticed it is faster than with hand or anything else.

Saws do break player placed logs faster. However, they do break them at the same speed as an axe of the same tier axe does, and not much can really be done to make one faster than the other as far as I know. However, saws are metal only, so automatically they're the faster tool of choice if the alternative is a stone axe.

Thatch does indeed have no tool associated with it. Even knives break it at the exact same speed. I have brought this up with Bioxx before, and it may be considered to set the scythe as the tool of choice. That way you only get the option of faster harvesting once you have metal tools, and it gives another use for the scythe.

I'll look into the option of setting the shovel as the tool to break tilled soil. Keep in mind that you still will not get any dirt back from breaking it though.

Good news everybody! The hardness value (and therefore the time it takes to break the block) of player-placed logs has been cut in half! Party Time!
