      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Surgar cane growth in the cold

37 posts in this topic

You would be looking for reeds then. Reeds and sugar cane are different things now and you only get paper from reeds. Now finding reeds is the next problem, i still havent and had to cheat in for a little progress.

TIL. Are those the ones that generate in drinkable water though? Because those haven't spawned in any of my new 79.10 worlds. :s

Vanilla sugar can is now called Reeds and make only paper. Sugarcane is a TFC crop. Spawning of reeds is like vanilla, perhaps rarer, but I've had no issue finding around -10k

To clear up the confusion, there are 3 separate plants.

  • Sugar Cane - Found naturally in the wild in the exact same manner as any other crop such as wheat, tomatoes, jute, etc. Spawns in all locations and not just by water. Will drop an item that has food weight, which must be processed in a barrel to get sugar.
  • Reeds - The renamed version of vanilla sugar cane. It is found directly adjacent to water source blocks, growing on sand or dirt blocks. Craft three of them together in the vanilla recipe to get paper.
  • Cattails - The plant found growing in fresh water, that does nothing other than alert the player that the water is drinkable.

Sugar Cane and Reeds look identical in the world, but drop items that look different.

What about adding an item that could generate some sort of heat?

To grow sugarcane? Just head south far enough for allow it to grow. Adding an item to provide heat for sugarcane to grow would defeat purpose of temp requirements.

The "solution" in TFC is to move closer to the equator to plant your farm.

So, in multiplayer the perfect solution would be to have several towns in different climates, what about singleplayer? I'm not playing this mod for too long, is several bases a common thing? Do people build southern bases to grow sensitive crops like jute and sugar cane and northern bases for longer food preservation?

I don't know about everyone but I only have one home base.  You might build way stations or temporary homes if you intend to be in another place for a while or return their repeatedly.  But honestly, it's enough work building up one base without trying for multiple bases.  I think you just try and find a location which has most of what you want.  I built in a location which I think will support sugar cane but I haven't tried to grow any yet.  But this means I won't see much snow.  It's a tradeoff.  I do get a frost but it's at the end of December at its earliest.

You really don't NEED every plant and every type of alcohol... but I certainly understand the pull to "catch 'em all."

speaking of alcohol, besides immediately crafting it into vinegar or drinking some to make your screen fuzzy, does alcohol serve a purpose in TFC?

If you have the Decorations addon you can use as fuel for Lanterns.

No. Alcohol was originally added purely as an Easter egg. Just something to do for the funny side effects like changing your screen, giving random potion effects, slurring any text you type into chat, and eventual death of alcohol poisoning.
