      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Hello Fellow Terrafirmacrafters! After spending much time learning the art of preserving food for the winter, I've decided to share my knowledge. Food can be hard to come by in this game, so stockpile it while you can!

Before we start, here's a list of things you will need!

Required:

Wool Yarn - This is gained by using a spindle on sheep's wool.
Barrels - At least two are needed, as one is for vinegar and the other for brine.

Salt and Fresh Water - Fresh water is used to make Alcohol, and then Vinegar. Saltwater is for Brine.

100oz Alcohol Materials - Wheat flour, Barley Flour, Rye Flour, Rice Flour, Cornmeal, Potato, Apples (green or Red), and Sugar.

100oz Fruit - It doesn't matter what kind , all you need is 100oz of the same kind to make vinegar.

Whatever you wanna dry/smoke/pickle. - Meats, Fruit, Vegetables... Most things can be pickled, and meats can be smoked or dried.

Salt (Optional) - Salted meats last longer, and stack with other preservation methods!

Step 1: Prep phase.

This phase is setting up before you actually start your work. Here I'll guide you through making ingredients into alcohol, alcohol into vinegar, and vinegar into brine.

Making Alcohol: Of the ingredients listed above, you'll need 100oz of one of them. Here is a handy screenshot to help you find these ingredients.

Take that 100oz object and toss it into a FULL BARREL of fresh water, like this!

It is important to note that the output says some sort of alcohol. Once it looks similar to this, seal up that puppy and wait a few days! The item will ferment into some sort of alcohol, and you should be left with something like this.

Making Vinegar: Now that you have alcohol, you can move on to the next important Step. Vinegar. Vinegar is made by placing 100oz of any fruit into a full barrel of Alcohol, then sealing it. It's important to note that the outcome says Vinegar.

If done correctly it should look like this:

After a day or so, you'll be left with a big old barrel of Vinegar, enough for 10 barrels of Brine.

Making Brine: At this point, you'll need your barrel of vinegar, and a second barrel filled with 9 buckets of saltwater. Fill a bucket with Vinegar and place the bucket of Vinegar in your barrel of saltwater. It will instantly become brine.

Here's the saltwater and vinegar ratio you want

And here is the finished Brine Posted Image

Step 2: Building the Smoker/drying rack

Smokers and drying racks are relatively simple. To make one, you'll need 4 blocks of any kind. You can even use trees. Just make sure they are 1 to 5 blocks apart. It should look something like this.

Now you need Wool Yarn. You will need 1 to 5 pieces, depending on how far apart your blocks are. While holding your yarn, simply right click the inner side of one of the parallel pillars, and it should connect with a Drying Line, making it look like this:

Voila, there you have one premium drying rack. In a bit you'll learn how to turn that drying rack into a smoking rack!

Step 3: Brining meat or other objects

Brining meat is an important step before you can smoke or dry your meat. Most people don't know how to do this, and it's often forgotten, resulting in confusion when the process fails. To brine meat, simply seal your cut of meat in a barrel of brine for roughly 12 hours, and it will become brined. When sealed in the barrel, it will say outcome brining. When the process is done, it will be called "Brined [object]" Where the object is whatever you initially put in.

Step 4: Smoking and Drying, what you've been waiting for.

Drying: Drying meat is simpler, less time consuming, and faster than smoking. That said, I assume smoking either gives better flavor or makes it last longer. To dry meat, simply take your Brined meat from the previous step, and with at least 1 yarn in your inventory click on the string of your drying rack. It should look like this.

Leave that there for a few hours in game, and then right click it to pull it off the line. The wool from hanging it is lost. If done correctly, congrats, you now have dried meat!

Smoking: Smoking is more complicated and more time consuming, but I assume it is worth it (I haven't actually tested)
To smoke meat, start at the drying step above, but do not wait the time to dry it. Instead, create a fire under it like this:

I've only ever successfully smoked while using hickory logs, but I haven't tested other wood recently. I'm going to show you with hickory logs, but if you can get it to work with other logs, good for you, let me know and I'll update this!

Open up that firepit and toss in Enough logs for 12 hours.

Edit: [18:19] <Bioxx> any fuel can be used for smaoking, however some of them add some wacky tastes
[18:20] <Bioxx> *smoking even

Finally, Light up that firepit. Once the fire has been burning for 12 hours, that meat should be ready to store!

That concludes our handy guide, and if I missed anything or you have questions or comments, I'd love to hear feedback below! Happy hunting, fellow meatlovers!

OK I finally got it to work ... after a bit of information from Bioxx.  The fire is required to burn for 12hrs (ingame) on my server this takes 9 logs. I do not know how this is different to your timing, but that is running on an SMP server running at 20 TPS.

Nope! Brine the meat raw. Then smoke it or dry it. It lasts longest like that. When you wanna eat it, take your dried or smoked food then cook it. But remember, once its cooked, it loses its decay resistance!

i just smoked my first meat - thx for this awesome tutorial :D . I dont think i would have figured it out on my own. Tough a few questions:

1. the smoking and drying - do they change the texture of the meat or how can i see that the process is finished? sun went down, sun went up and i was like - lets see what happens if i klick the meat - it was finished but i had no indication for it... or couldnt i remove the meat if it wasnt finished?

2. if you prickle stuff it changes the taste doesnt it? so is there even a point in doing so if you have afterwards only food that has probably ridiculusly sour stats? i mean since combining food into sandwiches stacks the sour values and doesnt take the mean of the values you end up with rather bad meals dont you?

Helpful for new players, but I would much rather see Noetherians guide stickies and put in the guides section. Not being rude, but it is waaaaay more in-depth.
