      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Domesticating Animals

6 posts in this topic

This idea comes from Haven & Hearth actually, but it would be great to see it in this mod. Basically in order to obtain a domesticated animal, you would first have to tame a wild one. For example, you would need to tame a wild boar in order for it to convert to a domesticated pig. The wild version of these animals would be more hostile or more scared of you than their domesticated counterparts. Since you're moving magical mobs underground, maybe these neutral ones can take over the surface. Some conversions...Wolf -> DogOcelot -> CatWild Boar -> PigMouflon -> SheepAuroch -> CowRed Junglefowl -> Rooster/Henect...

This is already planned, hence the recent addition of the familiarity mechanic listed in the change log.

A little add-on to this suggestion, what about wild animals being non-persistent while domesticated animals being persistent? This will allow for hunting, especially early game. To properly balance this, the meat dropped from wild animals should weigh less than domesticated ones.

You mean that wild animals would randomly spawn and despawn like squids for example? So they would theoretically become an infinite source? If they spawn rarely enough and give significantly less meat than domesticated animals, I'd like this idea very much!

That would encourage real hunting, without having to constantly worry that you extinct a species near your area, but still seems balancable enough.

As it is now, I don't dare to hunt at all, because I rather save the animals for bringing home (so much for the stone age being a "HUNTER/Gatherer Society"), especially with the new butcher-skill, but this idea would change this issue completely, and for the better I'm sure :)

I've always hated the idea of infinite animals/monsters/mobs... but this is crazy. If animals don't know how to grow their own babies in the wild, and run away from you, then you're going to make them go extinct within the first week. (GAME time, mind you!) If animals were abundant enough, would defend themselves/run away, then I would say no infinite spawns. But we don't have anything like that right now, so we might have to stick with infinite animals.

Also, I like the idea of domestication. When I saw the change log I was like "O.O" and wanted to play right away. xD. I'd like Kitty to move with it a little more. It fits in with the idea of the improvements to cooking... why not move onto animals? I'm sure wild cow tastes different than domesticated cow. Or baby sheep and adult sheep. (HINT HINT, KICK KICK.)

Agreed, we all want to hunt. "Wild Beasts" should be beasts, dangerous.
