      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Reason to go digging and spelunking?

16 posts in this topic

So now that we can also find sulphur on the surface near lava and every ore can be found near the surface with a bit of luck, what is there left to do in the depths of TFC worlds? Who still cares about these impressive open caves with nothing in there but death? I find TFC has moved further away from minecraft in b79. It's more like prospecting-survival-craft than minecraft to be honest. I'm just throwing my opinion out there so that perhaps in the future TFC can go back a bit to the roots of what it is based upon (i.e. minecraft). Spelunking and deep mining should be more rewarding and worthwhile.

I explore caves so that I have more places to prospect in different rock groups, and larger veins tend to spawn deeper underground. If I can find a cave that leads down into gneiss or whatever I'm looking for that could be quicker than travelling many kilometers overground. They're still terrifying, dark places + arrows + deep ravines = a sad, deadllama

I've started to avoid caves like the plague, full of mobs and if you break any block its probably going to cave in. I havent done that much mining but i would imagine its a good way to get different rock types.

Exactly. There is almost no point to caves anymore other than lagging servers due to constant high entity count underground.

Servers have a mob cap for naturally spawning mobs, so if they don't spawn there they will spawn elsewhere. That is why there are such a good number of mobs on surface in TFC, less dark caves for them to spawn in. Besides even if you are on surface mobs will spawn in dark caves if they are the right distance from player.

A huge cave in actually crash my server yesterday. For one side I like that we have to use supports for the added realism, but it makes it impossible to mine inside big caves. there is no way to support the ceiling of the cave, or at least no practical way. So I just told my players to avoid caves altogether. I see on the config option we have a cave in likelihood as 1 in x chance, but the propagation is the one that is causing the issue. So if you are mining and a few rocks come down is ok, but to have the whole huge cave come down create too many problems.

Can someone tell me for the propagation if I should change the number to a smaller or bigger?

Bioxx has said he is trying to have it treat natural caves differently so they don't cave in like they currently do. Can't find quote though.

"When a collapse occurs, each block within a random range of the initial one will be given this percentage chance of collapsing as well."

Make the number bigger, and the percentage chance increases. Make the number smaller, and the percentage chance decreases.

Personally, i wouldn´t mind if the chasms of the TFC worldgen was removed completely (and i would just kill to see a worldpainter plugin for TFC). They are just annoying and, for me, cave crawling has been done to death during the years i´ve played vanilla.

But i can understand that some ppl miss ye ol´ cave lurking. In vanilla you get a thrill of exploring the dark caves that are full of surprises, but the underlying reason to get down there is usually to find ores. And with vanilla oregen you are almost guarantied to find ores of interest in whatever cave you explore. So if you want old school cave exploration you ought to change oregen, and that´s not an option imo.

Otherwise, there´s still a reason to dig deep by the reasons Commiellama posted. And as of general spelunking, well, there´s plenty of reasons to do that on the surface: Finding wild crops, fruit trees and ore nuggets that gossips of the veins out there. This is has a special bearing if you play a server since the resources wont sit and wait until you dig them up. If you don ´t find them someone else will and as the server gets older the harder it gets to find previously undiscovered veins.

I like exploring large, nice-looking caves, but only for the heck of it. And with the torches going out and nothing especially beautiful to look at or fun to explore, I just ignore caves now.

I might go digging, but the other towns-people on the server take care of that end very well, so I don't go underground anymore, unless I'm running around like a fool and fall in.

While ive been getting frustrated with caves i dont think they should be removed. caves are a big part of minecraft and removing them seems odd. As well, im sure there are people who do still find caves fun and removing them would be a big kick in the pants for those people.

I quite enjoy exploring caves still. They are challenging with all the mobs, which I like. They save on picks and time by getting me much lower to find the bigger veins or get to a vein I found from surface. Once I'm at a better tech level I may use them for some builds as well.

Thanks for the info Kitty, I like the feature, cave ins add some realism and danger to mining, I just want to avoid the whole cave to come down at once.

Ehhh, for rare ores like graphite/garnierite/native silver, even finding the right rocks can be a challenge. In my world I found graphite in schist, which was in a cave. Especially ores that spawn in metamorphic/igneous rock, the lower you go, the more likely you are to find the right rock, and thus, the ore. Yes, I do think caves are a bit OP, but they aren't worthless, per se.

Since my last posts about how caves suck now, I've now almost exclusively mined in cave mostly for the ease of access to ores.  That being said I am now in peaceful, my cave in chance is 1/50, my cave in propagation is 35% and I'm much better with the new support beams.  So its a lot easier than it normally would be.

Increases ores generation near natural caves... so you are actually 100% sure to be rewarded if you found one :)
