      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Animal feed - silage

7 posts in this topic

I noticed that it takes quite a bit of grain to maintain/develop familiarity with any more than a couple animals. Are there plans on adding the ability to build a silo and make silage, or something similar? It would also give a use for straw which after the thatch change is far less useful.

Perhaps a silo could be a multiblock structure with an inventory (similar to a barrel in solid mode), where you add grain+straw and/or 'raw' oats/wheat/rye/etc. (prior to processing with a knife), then seal it and wait for a month+?

Thoughts?

I simple don't feed them anymore, is not worth the trouble with the current mechanics

Building and maintaining livestock is a late game mechanic. You may have to work up to planting fields of grain in order to properly maintain your livestock to familiarity.

Really? It doesn't really take that much feed to familiarize an animal. You don't need to get the meter all the way full, just to the white border is good enough for the most common tasks like riding a horse, breeding, and shearing/milking. Taming a horse is one of the things I do first in a new TFC world because fast travel is amazing for exploration.

I find that its not that bad either. Ive heard, hear and there that 5 days is what it takes to get them tame and after a few bumps in the early versions got smoothed out it hasent been much of a problem for me.

Simply tame a few up to the point that they wolnt degrade at a time, only starting on new when you have enough stocks of grain to train them fully. Once they are all to the point of no regression, you dont need to feed them, just leave them on grass, and when the babies are born, feed them some to make sure they will stay tame

Regarding the suggestion topic, i was toying around with the idea of adding maize for silage.

Being a farmer's son, i figured you could harvest maize one step before it becomes ripe and get a new item, let's call it green maize, in higher quantities, 2-3x as much oz per crop in relation to ripe corn. But you can't eat it, only animals can. And it spoils really fast when in contact with air. Then you'd have to silage it either in barrels or maybe as blocks under dirt? If that's even doable. Anyway ot could provide us with nice and believable way to feed our larger farms.

But let's be honest, something like this will never be implemented simply becouse there are bilions more interesting features waiting to be coded.

But of I could ask for one little change, we should not give animals raw grain. They won't digest it :P we should grind it first! So I suggest feeding them grain flour not raw grain, much more believable IMHO.

Thanks for your time and have a good day ;)
