      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Polished stone tools

8 posts in this topic

I feel that the mod could potentially be better with the ability to make polished stone tools. Polished stone tools would be stronger than knapped stone, but weaker than copper, and represent a more fluid change between the paleolithic and neolithic, followed by chalcolithic and beyond. I overlooked a forum rule, and will make a seperate page for the jugs portion. I also tentatively wish to ask if a polished stone pickaxe could be a thing, only because people did mine in the paleo and neolithic, but nothing more than stones and ochre did they mine, so only stones would be my wish. I again understand if you don't want to, I'm fine either way.

How exactly would you be supposed to make polished stone tools?

Btw you should create a new topic for each suggestion as stated in the forum rules.

Yes, I realized that right after I posted, that was my mistake. I'm glad you asked, actually, because I realized I didn't even have a method in mind. I suppose sanding it would be the way, wouldn't it? Some kind of modified ceramic bowl that can be used much like a gold pan, but rather than sifting, you fill it with sand and craft a stone tool together with it? Or perhaps a polishing station similar to the quern? It could use sand and a hand polishing motion.

a grinding wheel can polish stones and increase damage of weapons

No, this is a good idea. Sometimes when starting out there is ZERO tool metal nuggets for miles. having this added tier would really make it easier on unlucky players and those new to the modpack. I dig the research to, mentioning the "era's" makes much more sense to me. But certain stones should not be able to become polished like chalk and mudstone, but stones like granite are pretty tough.

Polished stone tools were made from different materials than knapped stone tools. Any difference in quality is due to the material used not the process. If this were to be implemented it would only make sense to change knapping and grinding to only be possible with certain types of stones.

Are you aware that stone tools have greater or lesser durability depending upon what stone type they were created from?

*Some types of stone will result in more durable stone tools than others. This is not immediately apparent, as all stone tool icons look the same.

In order of increasing durability: Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous Intrusive, Igneous Extrusive.

There are many types of stone in each category.*

Stone mining tools are historical. I don't think a stone pickaxe ever existed

The implementation would have to add gameplay to enhance the tech tree rather than make the game easier

One notable omission in TFC "historicity" is the lack of the ability (and a reason) to make flint mines

So if you want to add stone mining tools, maybe find a reason to add flint mines to the tech tree

Maybe flint mining tools+fire setting becomes a prerequisite for pickaxes? Maybe you need that to mine metamorphic stone (Tetrahedrite and Sphalerite)? You can get Bismuthinite in sedimentary, so you'd be able to make bismuth bronze once you can mine metamorphic

Of course then you need the ability to mine flint without metal pickaxes

Kill deer, get antler pick that can mine sedimentary stone (besides limestone)?

So maybe pure copper (which you can still find on the ground) can't make pickaxes anymore

Copper--> saw--> support beams/water buckets/leather etc

Antler pick-->flint+Bismuthinite

Flint+fire setting --> Sphalerite--> bismuth bronze pickaxe

Non copper ores would no longer able to be found on the surface

All fair enough points, thank you very much! I did know that different stones make durability higher, yes, and it would make sense for only some to be polishable. Also, I never thought about early mining picks not being stone. Antler would be a good idea, though, as you had pointed out. I don't, however, feel that the whole system needs changing just for an antler pick. I think they could just add ochre dyes, or if not, just make it able to get some types of stone. Thanks you guys for the wonderful ideas, I certainly hope this gets some attention to it.
