      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Animals and the extinction of monsters

15 posts in this topic

I think TFC can already use existing codes to extinct spiders, creepers, skeletons and zombies.

  • Primates can shot stones( like skeletons with arrows )
  • Leopards ( climbing like spiders )
  • Animals may have more consistent drops than monsters
  • This animals in real life animals can not be tamed without a special treatment or previous knowledge( so never in the game ).
  • Wild animals appearing out of nowhere are more consistent than stupid zombies
  • Night sounds will become more scary
  • You will can hunt
  • The high health points of this creatures will destroy any tries of easy food
  • Amount may be substituted by quality

Do you think animals can substitute monster atributes?

What do you think about monsters extinction and animals arise?

Someone actually came up with some type of replacement for overworld skeletons. Good job thinking outside the box

The problem is, you won't find primates in every climate around the world, or any other animal for that matter.I'm sure the devs have thought about that, and this may be one of the reasons for them seeming so reluctant to finally replace the fantasy mobs with real life ones ...

what about a wild tribe instead of apes, they can use spears and arrows too...

Has been suggested before, last time just recently (by you yourself, I believe). I don't think the devs like the idea, and I personally don't really either. How do you want to implement humanoids believably into this game without creating some kind of civilisation for them? Besides, I don't believe that even in the stone age every human you come across will want to kill you at sight, unlike natural predators who want nothing more than to feed their offspring, for instance.

One of the things we may consider, is that there is no need to have a whole bunch of different animal shunting you down. They can be specific to the region, so if you live near a jungle you will deal with monkeys, and all the way up north will be bears. Cats go every where.

You get the idea.

I think right now if we just replaced monsters with animals, just by changing the texture and name but keeping the same AI, it would be am improvement to the game. Then latter on they could work on those aninals.

I rather like this idea.

One of the big problems I see is that at the start monsters spawn more often and are very hard to deal with, and late game they barely spawn and are super easy to deal with. I feel it should be a bit less that way, and animals could help solve this.

It seems like you are talking about the spawn protection system, which operates in a 5-chunk radius. If you want a challenge now and then, just leave your home chunks at night and you will notice, that outside of your spawn protection, mobs will spawn just like on your first day ;)

Surface monsters are already planned to be removed

I´ve heard this statement many times, but i often get the impression that the devs are happy with the current monsters under the "believability" concept. Is there a confirmation on this?

Personally, I´m not that enthusiastic of this idea. Not that i think it´s a bad idea, it´s just that the mod is split between two genres imo. On one hand you got the survival mod where wild hostile animals fit perfectly. On the other hand you have a mod that emulates progression in metallurgy throughout the ages. Weapons like the sword and the mace and metal armor where developed specifically for combat with other humans and is a product of warfare technology. I find the thought of hunting a leopard with a mace and fine works like iron greaves pretty darn cheesy. So the removal of the skels and zombies makes the weapon and armor development part of this mod misplaced. Also, i think its nice if animals behave more like animals and not like monsters. Monsters are an entity that would take any risk in order to kill you, but an animal wouldn´t. They just wan´t to stay alive. I think the devs have done a good job to portrait this with the bear. If your close it will hunt you but it won´t pursuit you to the bitter end since you can outrun them.

The idea that has been repeatedly mentioning is moving the fantasy monsters underground (which for a practical coding reasons probably means below sea level) and having hosile animals above ground

Just because a dev sais it will happen, doesn't mean it will

I remember dunkleosteus posting saying he had good ideas to rework the Nether, improve the Ender Dragon. add mechanical power to TFC, cubic chunks compatibility

Its doubtful any of those 4 ideas will be added to TFC. There is also a good chance the lets move fantasy mobs underground idea are in the exact same boat

Creepers, spiders, zombies...

A full plates arent developed for suicide bombers, spiders bites and zombies punchers...

If you are hunted at night by a leopard you will want have the best armor and melee weapon ready for close combat and a bow for long range.

Show me armors developed to fight against animals...

You can hunt a leopard with a mace, i prefer a bow and traps.

"If your close it will hunt you"  250 meters is close to animal senses.

"it won´t pursuit you to the bitter end since you can outrun them" archers skeleton dont run for cleverly away from the melee, cmon bro...

Sorry if I messed up on something I wrote, I do not speak English.

The code is already there to move the fantasy monsters so they only spawn below sea level. It just hasn't been merged yet, as we are waiting for their replacements.

Yes, so what about their replacements? An open question still or do you devs want to be quiet about not causing a stir on the forums?
