      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Plants that need to be edible in TFC

6 posts in this topic

I'm a bit of an IRL survival nut, and something that had always bugged me in TFC is that it has two plants already in the game that, in real life, are viable survival foods, but you can't get food from them in game. In game, you can't farm seaweed... you have to find it. Its a food you wouldn't eat much past early survival or on long explorations... I think that we need more food like this in TFC, and the plants I was talking about earlier are cattails and the dandelion flower. I think, much like seaweed, you should be able to harvest but not farm them.

What do ya'll think? If this has been suggested before, sorry. I couldn't find a topic on it.

Cattails and dandelions are edible irl? O.o

Didn't know that.

But yeah stuff like this is very nice to have. What I'd like to see is biome/temp specific foods like this (only harvestable) to further distinguish dvery playthrough. So if you're starting in a tundra you wou won't find the same food you would in a jungle. Something like that. I think early game can have some more variety like that (not that it doesn't have any)

I think cattail roots are edible, and dandelions are very edible. Leaves, flowers, stem and roots can all be eaten in many ways.

Along with those, I think it would be nice if mushrooms where also edible. Also, getting roots and edible seeds from grass would be nice.

Some people now eat them for health reasons or because it's a bit "alternative", but it's a typical wartime food too, when the rationing got so bad it really wasn't enough, or supplies stopped. I've talked to old people who collected dandelions for actual survival when they were children. So it would be quite fitting as a last-ditch survival food in the game.

Honestly, they aren't that bad. I actually like the flavor of dandelion greens. Cattails taste similar to cucumbers...not as big of a fan of those, but they are better than most of the other plants in Georgia. Besides muscadines, of course.

ive been told that if you roast the brown bit on a cattail it tastes like potatoes.

on a further note. i think dunk said that making a block edible (mushrooms are blocks) is either hard or impossible. but since you can make recipes to change the items maby roasting them in a fire pit could give you rosted mushroom(s) and that could be edible.
