      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Metal Block Casting

9 posts in this topic

Chiseling detailed blocks is definetly one of the many best features in TFC. But with the amount of different metals avaliable, I think being able to display your riches in forms other than sheets and ingots would be really nice. How about a metal block casting system?

I picture it like this: you chisel a non-metal block, then you right-click it with clay for low-temperaure and fire clay for high temperature metals (more than one peice should be used). After that you take the cast off of the block, fire it, place it down and fill with liquified metal.

A full block would require 64 ingots, just like a full stack, and each ingot would translate into 8 miniblocks. That way you would be able to cast metal statues, bars, blocks and much more. It would also be cool if their resilience depended on the metal used -  gold statuesblocks should be much easier to bring down than steel ones. They are expensive, so some sort of practicality would be cool - casting a vault door for example.

Feel free to post your thoughts on this, I'm really interested.

I think its a good idea, its realistic, its a big fire clay mold using a blue print system. Some code economy

I agree and you have my vote !

Thank you!

I just wanted to make a shrine to a god from Dungeon Crawl, and then realised that most of the shrines there are made of metal. This would be a great use for metals that don't have any purpose other than for alloys, too - bismuth, nickel, platinum.

Like the idea, but maybe 64 ingots is a bit much...

Really hard to get enough to build something.  How about more like eight?  Also, idea for the cast:  Take plank block or log, and right click with four clay in hand on all four sides & bottom, then ignite top.  Burns wood away after, say, 5 hours, and leaves cast that could take 800 to 1000 units of metal to make block, in turn broken with pickaxe.  Feel free to add on.

Then its confirmed, we like!

It could also be useful for other things beyond ornate statues, like for some future tool or something

I would be ok with 32 ingots, I think that's what a one block high ingot stack uses, I would hope though that depending on you mold it wouldn't take all that. What about 6 units per mico block 3200U/512Mb=6.25U/Mb i hope i did that right.

The reason why I said 64 ingots is because it takes that many to make an ingot stack take up a block. The thing is, if you wanted to save up your metals, you could make statues hollow, make slabs instead of blocks, ect. The general idea is that 1 ingot = 8 miniblocks. That would be alot, but if the blocks are also really sturdy, then maybe it's justified for SMP.

And at the engo of the day, this could just be a default value in a config file.

Ah i must have got it mixed up with the stack limit in the inventory.  If its 64 to make a block then sure go for it.
