      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

why useless ore generation?

im just curious as to why we have the ores that have no use in the game what so ever (yet) being generated in the world, I mean wouldn't it be taking up room for the useful ores to spawn in? just curious is all.

There used to be even more useless ores in the game. I thought they were placeholders for later use but now i don't know. Think of them as flowers to decorate the world, no practical use.

TFC at first started as a mod that took inspiration from Dwarf Fortress, and I indeed went to check and all the TFC ores are present in that game. They were all implemented at the beginning of this mod, when believability and survival maybe wasn't the main focus of development, maybe it was something like bringing DF to minecraft.

I for one really like that there are "useless" ores in TFC, since that means it's much easier to create addons to take advantage of something that isn't currently used ingame. Creating some recipes and blocks/items is quite a lot easier than integrating with the world generation.

The primary reason that useless ores are generated in the world is so that players will not have to create a brand new world when we implement a use for them. So right now lead is useless, if galena didn't currently generate in the world, but we wanted to add a use for lead, all players would pretty much have to start completely over in order to get a world that has lead generating in it, or travel very very far distances to load new chunks and try to find it.

 

Remember that TFC is still in beta, it is not a completed, released mod. Many many things are still a work in progress.
