[Solved] Need help searching for rocks

Hi, I have a question about different types of stone. Specifically I'm looking for igneous intrusive and saltrock, but I've searched for thousands of blocks in every direction, and I just can't seem to find them. Should I be searching underground for them? I'm specifically trying to find igneous intrusive rocks so I can search for cassiterite, and I'm searching for saltrock to be able to preserve food. Any information I've looked up seems to be outdated or very non descriptive. If it helps the only rocks I can find on the surface are limestone and andesite.

The search is really getting quite desperate as I'm almost through early autumn and have no idea how I will feed myself or if I'll be able to enter the bronze age before spring where my time will be spent planting and doing above groundy things.

Stone generates in three separate vertical layers. Sedimentary can only be found on the top layer. Metamorphic is found in the top and middle layer. Igneous Intrusive and Extrusive are found in all three layers. Each layer is independent of the others in regards to where it changes specific stone type, so a change in the stones on the surface does not necessarily mean a change in the stone of either of the lower two layers.

 

In case this isn't clear enough, this is another way of saying it.

 

The top layer can contain any type of stone.

The middle layer can contain metamorphic and igneous stones.

The bottom layer can only contain igneous stones.

 

Everything else is completely random about generation. Just keep exploring and eventually you will find it. It is not uncommon to travel 10,000 blocks in a single direction to find a single material in TFC.

 

Also, salt is only one preservation method. There are many many other ways that you can preserve your food that don't involve salt.

I find the http://wiki.terrafirmacraft.com/Ores_%26_Minerals page the most informative. There are 3 Rock layers under your feet. Intrusive rocks can be all 3 layers. The bottom layer is always intrusive. RockSalt is sedimentary and can only be found on the top surface layer. It is not unusual for players to travel 10000 blocks to find a resource. There is no trick.

Thank you for the extra input. I had gone over both those pages (extensively and repeatedly I thought, but apparently not). I wasn't sure if there was information other than that missing so thank you for the clarification.

For choosing rock type there is equal chance of each available type. So 1/21 for each type on surface. 1/13 for each non-sedimentary type in middle layer. 1/7 for each igneous type in bottom layer. So as you can see overall igneous is most common and sedimentary is least.

As there is more than one type of bronze, getting to bronze age does not require cassiterite, you can also do it with sphalerite and bismuthinite, or with gold ans silver.
