      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

[Solved] Support beams.. not supporting?

6 posts in this topic

TFC Version #: 0.79.18

Forge Version #: v10.13.2.1291

Please note that an actual number must be provided for both of the above fields.
Simply saying "current" or "latest" will result in your post being locked, due to the fact that in a large number of cases, users who say they are using the "latest" or "current" version are actually using an outdated version.

SSP/SMP (SinglePlayer/MultiPlayer):

Description:  From wiki page - A single horizontally placed support beam will prevent cave-ins in an area that is 4 blocks in each horizontal direction, and 1 block above and below the beam (9x9x3 Area).

I mined block, that was uder block with torch (im pointing at it)

As you can see - it caused a cave in. Soo, support beams are broken? or im dumb?

Have you deleted your config files or are using default configs and are still able to reproduce this bug? (Yes/No): yes

If you answered no to the above question, delete all 3 TFC config files (TFCCrafting, TFCOptions, TFCOre), do NOT edit or add to any of the files, and try to reproduce the bug.
This question is here because many bugs are caused by mistakes in config files. All bug reports should have an answer of "Yes" to this question.

Do you have any mods other than Forge and TFC installed? (Yes/No):  yes
If yes, which mods?  Journeymap, Fastcraft

If you have Optifine or Cauldron installed, can you still reproduce the bug after uninstalling them? (Yes/No):  I dont have optifine or cauldron installed

If you answered no to the above question, uninstall Optifine/Cauldron and try to reproduce the bug.
Both Optifine and Cauldron edit the base classes of forge that TFC uses. Because of this, we cannot officially support any issues that happen only when these mods are installed. In the majority of cases, TFC is not causing the bug; Optifine/Cauldron is and TFC can do nothing to fix it.
All bug reports should have an answer of "Yes" to this question.
If you refuse to uninstall Optifine/Cauldron, and cannot reproduce the bug when the mods are not installed, do not bother making a bug report, as it will be locked and ignored.

Blocks scan when you mine them. Just because the block you mined was within the supported section doesn't mean it didn't scan around and find a block outside of the supported area to cause a cave in.

Edit: Was your horizontal support beam destroyed in the cave in? I only see vertical ones, which offer no support at all.

Mining the ore in the cave does never trigger a cave in. Scavenging a cave and mining any visible ore is totally safe.

The mined raw stone block scans a 9x9x5 area around itself. That is 4 blocks in every horizontal direction, plus two layers above and below. You do not need to support the whole cave, just all blocks within that scanning range of the raw stone block mined. However there is still a theoretical risk of an unsupportet block over a gap over a supported block that is not visible and might trigger a cave in.

You might cover that risk by using a chisel to smoth a stone at the floor, mine it and place is as a shield at the ceiling. Mining smooth stone never triggers a cave in. Cover a small area of 3x3 and you are safe under that shield. In case of a cave in, clear out any cobblestone. Mining cobble will never trigger a cave in so just get rid of any dangerous loose blocks.

You may clear out 90 % of a vein just by mining the ore and any smoothed stone to clear your path. Re-place mined smooth stone as stairwells, shields and walls.

Happy mining!
