      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Any benefits of digging deep?

6 posts in this topic

Seeing as TFC heightens the sea level to 145, which I like very much, are there any benefits of digging deep?

Are the veins more frequent or something?

There are three layers of stone beneath the surface. TFC has many types of stone and since ores and minerals have limited types of stone they spawn in, yes there are benefits of digging deep.

A few reasons. I've heard the veins are larger, although I have not checked code. A few ores are only found in igneous rock, nickel in gabbro only. Igneous rock can be found in any layer, always Ig in bottom layer. Frequently you'll need to dig down to find gabbro or graphite. I've also found silver challenging to find without digging into middle or bottom layer. All depends on the seed.

Other than the "surface" veins of the starting materials (copper, tin, bismuth, zinc) which are a bit smaller, depth has absolutely no influence on the size of a vein. The benefits of digging deep is that it gives you a variety of stone types to search through, without having to travel far on the surface. For example, the nearest graphite-bearing stone that is a top layer could be 10,000 block away, and at the same time there could be a graphite-bearing stone right under your base in the middle layer.

The bottom layer is only igneous stones, so if you are looking for an ore that only spawns in igneous stones, it may be easier for you to dig down to the bottom layer and search there, instead of walking around on the surface where there is a drastically lower chance of finding the correct stone type since all stone types can spawn on the surface.

One thing to note, you always see Igneous rock around lava or spa's. This is the same rock as in the 3rd layer.

So if you are looking for Basalt (because it's black) and can't find much on the surface (maybe only around a lava pool), dig down and there will be LOADS of it.

I don't have any hints for finding what the middle layer could be though, other than to dig! Oh, sometimes you can see it on the sides of VERY VERY high mountains. Chalk topped mountains then changes to another layer near the surface, that's the middle layer transition.
