      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I think this is a first on this forum. It's a political poll, dealing with the current American presidential race. Please, vote in the poll above and/or express your opinion below.

This is obviously geared toward Americans, don't feel bad if you aren't from the U.S. and have no idea as to what is being discussed. But please, contribute only if you have an idea as to what is being discussed.

I write this as I watch the Republican debates, and I was compelled to ask ya'll what your opinions are. I'm curious. (Personally I'm for Cruz, but I could go for Paul, Carson, Perry, Jindal, Walker, or Fiorina.)

(Sorry the poll is so long, there's so many republican candidates!!!)

I strongly suspected that there was a higher percentage of republicans than democrats on this forum, and this poll very much supports that. I'm not sure why, though. Interesting.

I find it refreshing that most people who participated so far in this poll are republicans. I think the political pendulum needs to swing back to conservative at some point.... Far left politics are getting old... And I'm far more libertarian that I would like to admit, so if I'm tired of all the PCness it would be reasonable to assume there are a lot more people out there who agree.

Indeed! Conservatives seem to be gaining lots of ground, winning back the Senate & House. Hispanics and African-Americans are abandoning the Democratic Party in droves. The Democrats' main candidate, Hillary Clinton, is very unpopular, deemed untrustworthy by the majority of Americans, and has near zero chance of winning. But the Republicans (Donald Trump cough cough Bush cough Chris cough Chhritie cough cough) really need to stop quarreling amongst themselves, we need to set aside our differences and work toward the common goal of taking back America. We can worry about differences later.

A step in the right direction would be identifying the cultural marxism which has pervaded our society.

My big issue for the 2016 race is with the Federal Reserve.  The whole system is built on debt and has a 100% chance of collapsing at somepoint in the future, resulting in hyperinflation.  I would encourage anyone to investigate on their own, and see for themselves!  That's why I support Rand Paul.

I'm for Ted Cruz. It's hard to find something he believes in that I disagree with. He speaks the truth. I've actually met him, and I have an autographed copy of his book.

I wont vote for Cruz... I think he's, well... that's probably better left unsaid, but it would be a cold day in hell before I vote for HRC. *shudders at the thought* Maybe the republicans or an independent libertarian.... idk. I'm definitely not impressed with most of the candidates, as you said anonymous conservative, there's a lot of infighting, and far to much bragging about money for my tastes. The almighty dollar is not a synonym for competency.

Not talking about any candidate in specific, but have you people noticed how all, or most of then anyways, always have a book?

The special interest people buy those books in the thousands, and is a way for money to exchange hands giving the impression of legality.

So corporation X buys 10000 copies of the book from candidate Z.

They can Declare the expense in their books and say they intend to distribute among their employees and customers, sometimes they even do it, ( would you believe?)

The candidate receive money from the editor, in a totally legal way.

In the end is a big subterfuge to manipulate the system so rich people can give money to candidates and influence politics.

BTW this is fact for Republican and Democrat Candidates.

And may I ask why you have such a problem with politics being discussed in the Off Topic section? Why don't you have a problem with anything or everything else that is being discussed in the Off-Topic forum? How is this any different? I'm sorry you're so offended. Edited by anonymous conservative

Socialism is just about the most oppressive form of government that has ever existed.

Personally, I like Carly Fiorina. She would have a good shot at winning against Hillary Clinton, since the gender card can't be played if it's woman vs woman. Carson is also pretty interesting. Cruz seems too much like a used car salesman. Just cant listen to him without wincing. Trump says some cool stuff and his unfiltered mouth is fun to listen to but I can't find myself believing that he believes anything that he says. Also he never gives specifics in interviews, its all talking points. Paul has some good ideas but is too much of an isolationist, which if the last 8 years have told us anything, only makes the world worse.

For the record, I'm about has middle of the line as you can get in regards to my politics. If you use This Political Test I am in the dead middle of the chart.

I'd take the worst republican over the best democrat. While I dislike some of the republicans, any of them would be far superior to someone like Hillary. I'm for any strong conservative that isn't afraid to speak the truth, and believe what they're saying. That's why I'm attracted to people like Cruz, Carson, and Fiorina. Trump probably just wants power. But we can't have someone weak like McCain or Romney. They'll lose every time. I agree about isolationism. We need to be involved, most certainly. Look at ISIS, they wouldn't exist if we still had a presence in Iraq. But not only has Obama been an isolationist, he has aided our enemies (inviting Iran to finish development of nuclear weapons, refusing to fight ISIS, backing Muslim Brotherhood president in Egypt, etc)

Well that's really not fair to say. Democracy itself is not what caused, nor what had, anything to do with the oppression of slavery. That was man's fault, pure an simple. Democracy may have allowed that, but it also removed it. Whereas the oppression that is created via socialism is enshrined in the fundamental mechanics of how it works. In a utopia, socialism or even communism would probably be perfect. However, given that we live in a selfish world where a good chunk of the population needs to see a benefit for themselves in the act of helping their neighbor before they will do it, a person needs an incentive to share their piece of the pie. Holding a gun to their head (which is what the repercussions of your failure to pay exorbitant taxes is akin to) is a terrible incentive and many would argue is actually counterproductive. If you're going to take 50-75% of my money, above a certain amount, in taxes, where is my incentive to work harder to make more money? It just feels like I'm being punished for being too successful. I'd rather be 'just' successful enough, instead of being outstanding in those circumstances. So would most people I think.

I know that democracy wasn't the cause for slavery.  I was pointing out the absudity of making blanket statements about something.  None of the political ideologies can be summed up that way.  Pure socialism, I'm sure would be a disaster, just as pure democracy would.  Ours is as hybrid system.  Sweden's has mores socialism mixed with it's democracy than we do, but it works for them.  Mainly because a populace that is well educated and free from the anxiety that comes with no healthcare, retirement and high debt is happier and does not feel the need to rob and kill their fellow citizens.  I guess it comes down to, how much would we pay to have the safety and security we want?

I don't know what the best mix would be for our government/society, but I know that it's not as simple as black and white, either/or.

We should not be willing to surrender a single inch of liberty for any degree of security. Do you think the people who founded America were willing to do that? Obviously not. They fought a war over it. America was not founded on the idea of being safe.

I was talking about taxes, not civil liberties.  What's a reasonable amount to contribute for the general welfare and security of the nation.  You're obviously angry about certain things and want to take it out on someone.  You've got a picture in your mind of whoever it was that stole your sweet roll, and your projecting it on me because I'm the only target handy.  Well, I'm not the droid your looking for.

I'm certainly willing to debate these subjects rationally, as Bioxx has done, but if your just going to throw out tropisms and recycled propaganda, then I won't bother.

That's all I have to say in this thread.

Nothing is ever really black and white. I love the Franklin quote but it is applied too broadly. We give up liberties all of the time for security and for good reason. Read broadly enough, the 2nd amendment allows me to own patriot missles and nuclear weapons. Arms means armaments, which basically applies to any weapon that man can dream up. But the govt doesn't allow that and for pretty good reason I'd say. There is an important balance to keep, but blanket statements make too many assumptions to be of any value.

As for the question of "What is a fair amount to pay in taxes?", I believe in a scaling multiplier instead of the tiered systems that we rely on today. I couldn't begin to give actual numbers, except to say "I know its too much when I see it".

However, I don't believe that the govt throwing money at entitlement programs is the way to solve any of our issues. Maybe some countries have responsible adults in charge and won't waste most of our moeny, but the good ole U.S. of A. is not one of those countries.

I sorta have to agree that socialism isn't inherently bad. There definitely is a time and a place for it. Consider the elderly. Without social security, and programs like Medicaid these people would have no one and nothing in way to many cases. There needs to be a small amount of income redistribution there in order to protect people who simply cannot protect themselves. I'm definitely not talking about the do-nothing-by-choices of the world, and am in favor of capitalism.... Socialism with respect to the environment, and specific social policies is a good thing, and its simply wrong to say that "Socialsim" is a bad thing. Its like almost everything else in this world. Simple black and white perspectives utterly fail to describe and appropriately handle the situation, and people who want to sell you a black and white perspective haven't really thought about it enough. And if you buy into it, you haven't either.

Also @Bioxx -Flat tax is where its at... Tired of you bleeding hearts with progressive tax systems. We all benefit from our government fairly equally, we should all pay into it equally.
