      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Water damage!

9 posts in this topic

I think the game could be more challenging if the player to damage in water, like on land. Even if you jump into deep ocean, you still take damage, in real life this would hurt or kill you depending on height. Also, if water falls on you from a height it deals damage depending on the height of the source block to your head. This would make things more interesting.

Wasn't there a mechanic in vanilla minecraft that if you jumped from a certain hight, at least 2 blocks of water were required to not take damage?

If so I have no idea why it got removed and why it shouldn't be added back to TFC.

I think taking damage no matter the water depth is a bad idea.  Early on I was a bit incredulous myself that 1 meter of water prevented damage from any height.  But I grew to enjoy it.  Cliff diving is too much fun, and doesn't really hurt any kind of balance imho.

I know it isn't true but it almost seems like some TFC fans are masochists.  "How can we make this game harder, more unpleasant, and less rewarding?"

not gonna lie, im totally a masochist. probably why i like this mod and i decided to make a texture pack for the crazy number of blocks it has, as well as started taking in requests for texture assistance on addons. maybe i should start charging money for it... XD but i digress. i do kinda like the idea of it. it should still be highly reduced from falling without water, but i just dont think its very realistic/believable being able to dig a hole to bedrock, put a pool of water at the bottom, and be able to jump in from the top of a mountain and not die...or at least break your neck....another idea is the addition of rusting armor, where  if you stay submerged for too long, your armor will take a bit of a durability hit (or just a %chance to) with salt water causing a bit more damage than fresh. no more swimming across the sea with full metal gear without taking some sort of consequences. make thyself a boat, ye dirty peasant lol

Well, if fall damage were to be applied to water I think it ought to be reflective of reality.  People can go cliff diving without injuring themselves.

Personally, when there is some unbelievable aspect to the game, some loophole, I usually don't employ it.  I've always hated the water break at the bottom of a huge hole in someone's minecraftian home.  It didn't seem to make sense to me.

Rust?!  Ugh.

I think the vanilla damage formulae somewhat looks like this:

Fall damage= fall height -4

I wonder how hard it would be to change it to something like this:

Fall damage = fall height -4 -((squareroot of fall height ÷2)× water depth)

(Omitted TFC damage multiplier)

Meaning you would need about twice the squareroot of your fall height in water depth to nullify falling damage.

100 cubes high fall nullified by a little less than 20 cubes of water.

Then again, swimming up might prevent you from hitting the sea floor anyway.

I kinda forgot about this post.... Anyway, i just think since the mod wants to be believable, it should be added, it might be hard to add, i don't know. It doesn't seem very realistic to jump from 100 meters (blocks) into a 1 block water source and be ok.
