      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Separate Classes for different plant crops.

7 posts in this topic

Have you read, understood, and followed all of the rules listed in large text at the top of the suggestions forum?(Yes/No):
Answering "no" to the above question will result in your post being deleted.

We were having a discussion about uses for metal tools and it come to light that all crops are part of the same class, so it is really hard to change specific behavior.

Since we are ( by we I mean you guys) coding tfc2 from scratch, maybe it would be a good idea to have different classes for vegetables and grains.

Also while on the subject ( BTW a subject that I understand very little ) Maybe we should have specific classes for different foods, That would allow different mechanics for fruits, vegetables and grains.

My point is that the way we interact with a bell pepper plant is so different from a wheat plant.

In any case, just a suggestion to who knows make things easier in the future.

I actually liked the idea of needing different tools to harvest different crops effectively from that other thread, so I support this or some way to allow that.  Offhand I thought there should be:

Scythe - all grains (barley, oats, rice, rye, wheat)

knife - peppers, corn, green beans, soy beans, squash, tomato, jute

Shovel - potatoes, onions, garlic, carrot

This is something that I'll think about. I'm switching gears again but I've been working with food a bit lately. I'll see how I can apply this.

Nice, and punching crops destroys the yield :P

I dunno, punching apple trees could be an excellent method of producing fist-mincemeat.

Pam's harvest craft has three different crop types.

There are normal harvests, where the entire crop is dug up, and must be replanted.

These would typically be root veggies, grains, etc

There are also regrowth crops. These are different in that the produce can be harvested without destroying the plant. These are usually your stalk and vine variety.

The final type is the hanging variety, in which the fruit is actually a block underneath the leaves of the tree

Now, that is just Pam's way of doing it. Now for my opinion

I feel that different crops should have different mechanics, not only because it would break free of the cookie-cutter approach of treating all crops identical, but also because it would give more variety in gameplay.

Now, on that note, I don't think that it should be /required/ to take these extra steps, but there should certainly be an incentive to use the correct tools, say, when harvesting a certain type of crop

Oh, and please, please, add sounds to farming actions. Maybe a *plop* to harvesting vine/stalk plants, a *shink* to harvesting grains, and a *rustle* when planting seeds.

It really does give feedback on what you're doing

You actually used to be able to harvest peppers and tomatoes in TFC without destroying the plant.  Not sure of the story on why it was changed to the way it is.   Speaking as an irl gardener, green beans and squash are two more plants that produce over a period of time.  I assume this was considered a bit too advantageous, so they were changed to be as they are now for gameplay balance reasons perhaps.
