      Server Move   09/13/18

      I (Dries007) have recently taken over as main developer and server admin. This involved moving servers to reduce cost. It's likely there will be some more downtime in the future but most  things should be sorted by now. TFC2?

What is this about? Is TFC1 finished? Why start second when first isn't finished? Whats going to be different?

Short story is like this:

Dev's want to port tfc to the new Minecraft 1.8.x, Dev's realise that Mojang changed so much in the way Minecraft works that they would have to scrape off tfc and completely rewrite the whole mod from scratch.

That would be a really boring thing to do and not fun at all.

Dev's decide to stop the development of tfc and instead write a completely new mod with some of the features and mechanics existing in tfc but with the freedom to create something new and exciting.

What will be different? Only time will tell. 

For now the official police is that there will not be further development for tfc, only minor tweaks and bug fixing. All efforts will be concentrated in creating tfc2.

so is it a good idea to start looking at coding a mod for TFC2?

Considering that at this point TFC2 is essentially nothing more than the beginnings of world generation and barely alpha stage, I would say no.

I just re-read the above message about full rewrite and things, and this question came to mind:

Why is it actually called TerraFirmaCraft 2 if it's nothing like TerraFirmaCraft? Common experience says that sequential iterations should hold at least some similarities.

So, maybe, a different name?

A bunch of the assets like textures are going to be the same. There are plenty of other mods where the next big version is practically a whole new mod but they use the same name. Applied energistics and equivalent exchange are two examples.
