      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Mass casting using casting channels and molds

4 posts in this topic

Have you read, understood, and followed all of the rules listed in large text at the top of the suggestions forum?(Yes/No): Yes
Answering "no" to the above question will result in your post being deleted.

I feel a system like this could be pretty useful if added by reducing the micromanagement when you're producing lots of ingots after a mining trip. Instead of going and melting down the ores, then casting them into ingots one-by-one, you could instead use a crucible or similar block to melt down the ores, then tip the molten metal into a casting channel linked to a large number of ingot casts. After a time the metal will cool and allow you to take the ingots out en-masse and ready for future storage. If some of the procedurally generated metals are able to be cast into tools, perhaps allowing the production of tool casts for mass production would be possible, too? Although casting tools could give it no bonus from your smithing skill, and possibly a malus if potential mass production is seen as a bit overpowered.

Not to mention I think it'd look pretty cool seeing the molten metal spreading through your casting system.

I honestly feel like I could have explained this a lot better, but this idea has come to me in a bout of tiredness, and if I waited until after I slept, I'm pretty sure I'd forget about it.

Excellent idea! May I add: a higher tier levered mold that can be opened without breaking it. Made from fire clay, probably, and used for casting several objects en masse. Needs to be fluxed first.

I can now see a large horizontal wheel, slowly rotating using hydropower, and on the wheel, molds for arrowheads. The gears rotating the wheel have systematic defects, causing it to stop every few seconds for a while. Metal gets poured in using a synchronised similar gear, and the filled molds go along, through a small stream of water, cooling them. A rod forces the lock in the mould upwards and open, dropping the arrowhead in a barrel. This open mould now is closed by a brush genlty forcing the halves back together using the rotation of the wheel, and gravity drops the lock back into it's groove. The process begins anew.

A very similar idea to this post.  Except that one didn't envision actual pouring animations and so forth.  At first I was against the notion of casting metal tiers above tier 2, but I think with a sufficiently complex system, it might be justifiable.  As you say OP, casting loses out on any smithing bonuses.

I really like this idea, and I think I might be able to improve on it

If you were fine with the standard cast item, then that would be fine, you'd just wind up with a "Cast Steel Arrowhead" or whatever, which would have no smithing bonuses and you'd get no experience from it. However, if you wanted to get xp from it and/or the smithing bonus, then you could go through each one individually and smith it into a completed item.

This would mirror the real life process of having to smooth out any rough edges from the casting process, temper the metal, sharpen it, and so forth.
