Tameable, 'milkable' giant spiders.

28 posts in this topic

Alright so: spiders. Big, scary, unfriendly, quick and dangerous.

During the night.

During the day they're docile and almost friendly. They're also a reliable source of String.

So: why not make them tameable? Box one off, feed it meat, avoid it at night, and eventually it'll self-tame and allow itself to be 'milked' for String with a Bobbin (three sticks in a line). The hardest mob in the game to tame, but a good source of Spider Meat (tastes like crab!) and four String once a day once tamed.

interesting idea - do you mean "for string...when trained" or "four (4) string...when trained"?

People on Internet forums are notoriosly bad at spelling; hence my question.

I think four string every day would be a bit too much.

Given that they'd be the hardest mob in the game to tame-requiring three days of being fed meat before gaining any Familiarity-and it takes 24 String to make one Silk Cloth, I think one Silk Cloth per spider per week is fair.

I kind of like this idea, but I think it should be even harder yet somehow.  But that would require there be an actual benefit to the silk, beyond beds and clothing.  Maybe spider silk armor or something.  Maybe silk for mere clothes can be from silkworms.  Also if spiders have a poison effect in TFC2, the farmed spiders could actually be 'milked' for venom, to produce antivenom (poison resistance potion).

why only milk for antivenom? (mwahahaha)

It could be that spiders can never be permanently tamed.  They'll always lose familiarity over time.    That way they would need constant attention, to keep being productive.

As for the taming, irl spiders in my experience (from my youth) are not interested in dead insects.  They are not (for the most part) scavengers.  I think it would be great if the taming of them required the player to bring them live animals to feed on.   I suppose that'd require that only tamed animals work for taming a spider, and it only works if a player is within a certain distance.  This way a spider does not gain familiarity just by the player happening to be close when the spider finds wild untamed prey.  Though depending on how uh, grim TFC2 is planned to be, it would be interesting if the player could also capture enemy humanoids, make them a prisoner with manacles or something, and feed them to the spider!

If TFC2 keeps vanilla's Rabbits, they'd be the perfect form of Spider chow.

The other use for Spiders would be-mounts! Skeletons can ride them, why can't you? Apart from being heavier, probably. Unarmored or leather-armored only, maybe?

Spiders being slower than horses-much slower-but also capable of climbing sheer walls would make them quite valuable indeed. Plus the ability to make them attack on command, ala Caragors in Shadows of Mordor!

Not saying I like or dislike the idea.

just curious about how one would go to keep a spider in a enclosure, ( They climb walls ) and at the same time be able to feed it without being attacked by the spider. Specially harder if you have to use live food.

Well hypothetically speaking, if you were to keep spiders like that, an overhang would work fine to allow an opening at the top to drop in live food.

All part of the difficulty!  If we're being honest, taming normal animals isn't hard at all.  It's just time consuming.  Just run up with food, click, repeat in 24 hours.  But having to use live mobs to feed an aggressive climbing mob, which can't be permanently tamed?  THAT deserves a reward!

That's what I was thinking. Still not sure if it would be a good idea to domesticate spiders , but certainly would make some interesting designs for spider pens.

I welcome the idea of riding spiders and climbing up straight cliffs. Nearly as good as flying around. (Giant flying bats anyone?)

I think your supposed to feed it in the day when it's not aggressive.

Yeah I know.

I was referring to the whole dynamic of building an enclosure with an overhang to keep the spiders from escaping during the night. Not counting the how to attract a spider into this enclosure, since even though they are not aggressive in day light they will attack if provoked.

Don't think milking spiders for strings would actually be  a profit. We already have Sheep and wool yarn.

The only main advantage I can see from domesticating spiders would be to have a saddle and mount them. They would be useful to crawl up from ravines, but to be believable they would need to be slower than horses.

So in the end I still not sure if it would be worth the effort.

Maybe as a war mount?

For it to be worthwhile from a production standpoint, there'd need to be new uses for silk, new game mechanics maybe.

Spider mounts could have a variety of other disadvantages, including the aforementioned never-stays-tamed thing, and they may also be permanently hostile to animal mobs, so the player would have to be careful around their own animals.    They could also move slower in daylight, faster at night.  They may or may not be breedable, but if so, the female always kills the male >:D

maybe instead of string they give you spider silk which can be used to make traps which could catch small animals like rabbits and some birds

War mounts sound cool. Maybe smithing new armor for them and making metallic pincers for extra damage. Also, maybe a Highly trained spider could shoot a web and grapple hookshot style.

Irl, spider string is very strong and durable, so perhaps spider silk clothing lasts a long time
