      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Mechanical power

5 posts in this topic

In several topics I have seen mentions of mechanical power, so I'm making a topic for it.

So, first power production, perhaps we add wind and water turbines, and possibly even steam boilers that produce power.

Next, power transfer, power is transmitted through shafts that can be made of different material and break if too much strain is put on them, for turning shafts you could add some kind of bevel gear, possibly even belts and belt hubs.

I should probably describe how power works, power is measured in speed and torque, these values are separate and don't depend on each other, machines require a certain amount of speed or torque, depending on the machine or tool your using, if too much torque is put on a shaft it breaks, speed  and torque can be interchanged by using a gear box, there would different kinds of gear boxes with different gearing ratios.

Finally, a list of machines that use power: sawmill, pottery wheel, spinning wheel, grinding stone, lathe, and many more could probably be thought of.

I have asked for mechanical power for a long time, but thinking of Machines is just one step in creating such an important part of the mod.

There is a question of creating a need for the machine in the first place.

For example, let us suppose from now on whenever we mine an ore block it would give us the actual block. This block would need to be crushed in a grinder.

This would be a slow and time-consuming activity.

To make matters even more interesting we could add fatigue to the mod, so after a while, you need to stop to replenish your stamina. Fatigue also increases food consumption.

Now the player has a reason to make the Mechanical crusher.

This is just an example, and may be read as an actual suggestion for the use of mechanical power or not, the important part is the process of creating a need and a solution at the same time.

Yes, it is also important to add a use for everything, I just thought of something else, babbot bearings, babbot is an alloy made of copper and lead(gives a use for lead),

So here I am being 'that guy' again.  This topic has already been discussed at pretty good length, under the thread title Mechanisms and Mechanical Power.  Note the title already has the words "mechanical power" in it.  Same as this thread.  Search function folks.
