      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Scythes, Am I using this tool correctly?

14 posts in this topic

Iv only used Scythes twice, once a zinc scythe then a bismuth scythe. And im not liking them.

They seem to lose durability extremely fast as well as yielding a poor amount of saplings.

My method is to use the scythe in the middle of the leaf blocks on one side of the tree, then go around to the other side of the tree and do the same.

This leaves an H shape (when viewed from above) in the leaves. I then break the remaining leaves by hand. Usually getting 0-1 saplings per tree.

While doing it all by hand is slower, I can at least get enough saplings to replant my trees.

Call it a conspiracy or whatever.

  • Scythe - I've never got more than 1 sapling, very often 0. Attempt to create Tree Farm using the Scythe failed horribly due to lack of saplings (used 5 trees per tree type)
  • (empty) Hand - always got at least 1 sapling, 3 at most.
  • Stick in hand - always at least 2 saplings, 3 on average with a World Record of 6 from one tree.

No clue if it's just RNG or what, but i will stick to ...sticks.

Pre-release 25's change log:

Sapling drop chance (hand) is now 6% from 4%

Sapling drop chance (scythe) is now 4% from 3%

The scythe is a waste of resources if you ask me. It will kill off any tree farm over time. It gave me 1/2 the saplings back compared to the trees I destroyed.

I think the whole thing is backwards. It should be the scythe gives more back than the hand considering its a tool and tools (usually) make things more efficient.

Scythes are useful mostly for Willow trees, since they have so many leaves it's very unlikely you'll not end up getting at least 1 sapling from it, as well as a number of sticks. Any other tree though, and scythes quickly lose their puspose.

Well technically using a scythe would destroy a tree and gather more sticks effectively (which is what the scythe is for, not getting saplings) But the ability to get a useable saplings (more like a cutting), while using something like a small knife would do better for collecting cuttings to "clone" the tree.

So the knife is going to give us more saplings?

Still think using a tool even if its use isnt exactly the same as in real life should be more efficient than hand.

How about incorprorating better crop yeilds when harvested using a scythe? Phase it out altogether as a tool for collecting saplings...

Shouldn't the scythe be used to harvest wheat and grass if hay is ever added?

irl, I dont think iv ever seen any one use a scythe on a tree. While it can be used to reach over head branches I dont think it designed to really cut them very effectively.

Granted Iv never used one in real life.

There are several styles of clippers and shears that could be used to replace the scythe in its job.

That's in IRL, Bioxx made them for trees, or so it would seem.

Well Bioxx is working on the agriculture system, just wait and he might add a use for the scythe on those crops instead of wasting his time on adding it for the default wheat.

I seem to do better just using a stick. I just completely denuded a willow tree and got 114 sticks and 25 saplings.
