      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

New Building System Thoughts and Ideas

8 posts in this topic

I read the update about Bioxx's ideas for building just now and thought of some ideas. I think it would be cool if you could still build things without the need of mortar, nails, so forth, but adding these things in would make them sturdier and stronger. For instance cobblestone normally falls to the ground, but if you add mortar to it you could then put it between two other cobblestone blocks and it wouldn't fall down. Same could be done with nails and wood, however, that will require wood to have physics which right now it doesn't.

These are a few ideas, post yours below or what you think of mine so Bioxx can have a concise Topic to go to. Cheers!

Well, I had already mentioned new building blocks made from existing materials in a past thread called "New blocks, old building methods" which I think would be cool as it adds more uses for existing blocks like gravel, clay, and most importantly dirt. I had suggested the ability to make adobe, mud brick, and/or rammed earth constructions as these were actual methods of building used by ancient civilizations and would give us more options as far as building is concerned. Also, the ability to make these different bricks would fit in with the mortar idea (except for rammed earth which wouldn't need it) as opposed to just etching brick designs on stone with the chisel.

You know I actually had an idea for glue (slimeballs and borax), but I couldn't really think of a use. Maybe planks could go out only so far from a ground-touching block (like 4 or so blocks out), and it could be used to extend that amount (glued planks could extend 8 blocks away for example)

...kindof a crappy idea actually. I'm tired.

See the simple physics mod. This is exactly what eternal is saying, and it kind of fits.

I kind of like the idea that architechture is linked to advancement in the game. As it stands, a player can just make stone tools and a chisel, then build a massive mansion without even aquiring iron. If we needed to make mortar, nails, glue, and the like construction would be a lot more effort, but much more rewarding, and it just feels right (to me).

It may not mean much coming from a newbie, but I like option B.

The main reason to play this mod is to have a more realistic game. Any house in the real world will have columns and beans to support the roof. Realism is good and it only gets bored if it takes too long to actually do something. For example if you need wood you can quickly fill your backpack but if you need sticks is easy to spend 2 full days to get 2 64 stacks. There is a discrepancy there. Logically if I cut down a tree I should get wood and sticks and saplings. I hate having to break leaves to get sticks and saplings. Love the mod and this does not prevent me from playing it. The problem from trying to be too realistic is that the Minecraft day is too short. So there is not enough time. When you look is already night. Another issue is the fact that time does not pass when you sleep. So as long as you are careful to sleep at sunset there is no need for shelter. Many times I have gone exploring just having a bed in my inventory as night comes I go to sleep and in the morning I continue exploring. What could be more unrealistic then sleeping in the forest with no protection? I think you should not be allowed to sleep unless protected. Now one of the things to remember is that we would be force to return home at sunset so we go back to more daylight time to be able to do anything. So a new building system needs to account for the first day. We should be able to build something very simple quickly enough to survive first day, even if more complex constructions would require more advance materials and time. In an accurate sense the first home were the caves. From there to constructions made of sticks and mud then to wood planks and finally to stone. The first roofs were made of straw. I actually would love to see some straw roofs. I think it would look nice.

Dude, chillax. This post is way too descriptive of its off-topic elements, you're using a lot of sentence fragments, and the blue just makes it seem like you're trying to stand out too hard.

You don't need to go over the top, just post your idea/accolades/criticisms.

I spent some time working with cobble houses and generally ended up using two or three vertical support beams and a single horzontal support beam at each end of the house. It prevents my cobble windows from caving in but is aesthetically unpleasing. I had pondered the ability to construct things like: roof trusses, joists, window and door frames etc...

I ended up using wooden slabs for the roof but given the fact that they key to the bottom block edge I have half block gaps running the length of the roof. I pondered possibly thatch or fired clay tile roof sections. It would be pushing the game engine and graphic sets a little to have blocks that visually and in regard to physics exist on a diagonal...

I'm all for expanded building materials though...

My current houses look like they sport a gallows at both ends!
