      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

How I discovered TerraFirmaCraft

I'm a gamer; been playing computer games since I can remember. When I was about 5 my dad bought an Amstrad. It wasn't long before I was coding up my own games in BASIC.

 

Fast forward a couple of decades and I have a passing knowledge of C and I'm working in a software development business testing software. The place is full of nerds like me who love games. And not just computer games; boardgames and card games as well. At one point, about ten of us worked through an online game design course by Ian Schreiber to learn a few things and have a bit of fun. It was rad. We made many prototypes and learned a lot.

 

A little while later, a workmate and I decided to have a crack at making (yet another) survival game. We wanted to make a game where the player has NOTHING and has to survive from the land. Not a scrap of modern technology available. NO ZOMBIES. No guns. No tools (starting to sound familiar?). We got started in Unity. Really, we didn't get far at all. We had a player who could run around, bash sticks and apples out of trees and eat phantom food and see how it affected the metabolism.

 

It fizzled out, but it has been in the back of my head to give it another crack one day. We had gone too deep too soon, so I was playing with the idea of creating a Minecraft mod to play with some of the game mechanic ideas before trying to build the game from scratch.

 

I mulled this idea for about a year before finally deciding "I should have a look at this Minecraft modding thing." My first google search lead me to a forum where someone was wishing that someone would make a Minecraft mod with X, Y and Z, based on survivalism and stone aged tech etc. The first response to this post was someone saying "dude, you know you just pretty much described TerraFirmaCraft?"

 

And that's how I found out about this mod.

 

I'm stoked that there are other people who share my enthusiasm for this kind of gameplay and it's very exciting to be able to be involved (on the edge) in the design process with the cool discussions that are going on in this forum.
