      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

If construction is implemented

6 posts in this topic

So I was/am building a wood-plank house, and I start to go all realistic like I do a lot. I decided to look up wood hardness so I could build an accurate second story with balcony. I found this wikipedia article: Janka hardness test

I was thinking, if construction were implemented, and we needed support and the like, why not use a system like this to specify the weight a support beam and floor holding it could could carry. I.E. A pine support can carry less than an ash support because ash is harder than pine. Therefore, if you try to build a stone floor on a pine support with pine walls, it would collapse. However, an oak floor on stone supports with stone walls with a pine floor with oak supports and oak walls above, would not collapse.

Funny but true story.. Most modern homes are built out of pine wood, it just helps to know how to built a proper load barring frame that will support the weight of the floor above or instead of using planks you simply use Logs as the main supports.

One of my old house in Massachusetts you could go into the basement and see all the wood logs that made up the first floor supports and in the few places we opened up the walls to fix things the main supports were logs as well and this was a 3 story home.

I help my father at work all the time (he's a builder) and it's pine in the walls pine in the roof and hard wood for the floors. There are bigger supports every now and again so the 2 floor doesn't become part of the first floor but that's it.

I was just suggesting a weight limit... Bad example I suppose.

That's all right but still I think that will be over kill for a harder building system. And remember it's NOT real life its a game. :)

Maybe a basic hierarchy with some kind of wooden supports can actually support X kind(s) of material(s).

And I don't like much stone supports, I think this enter some hard sculpture/knapping metod, maybe some cement and... bleh.. don't actually like. Simple stone supports are just a rock that we put there to stop things from going down. If is just a esthetic need, we have the Chisel for modeling a nice column. xD

And we don't need more types of material to make supports I think, as we already have enough wood species to make a lot of hierarchy on support power, if that's implemented someday. :P
