      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Vertical Support beams dont work?

2 posts in this topic

Im still very new to this mod, but I was digging up using vertical support beams to keep cave in from happening.

it was my understand that support beams prevent cave ins in a 5x1x5 area. So thats how I was using it. until I got a cave in now I have cobble stone all around my vertical support beams.

So do I need to use horizontal support beams to have the 5x1x5 protection zone with the vertical beams only used to get the horizontal ones up there?

It appears I know even less about cave ins than I thought. It was my understanding that cave ins will only trigger if you mine a block that has air under it. yet I just dig out a block that had stone all around it expect for the one side I could reach it from, I got cave ined.

Some info on how cave ins work exactly would very much appreciated.

~man buried alive.

Yes you do need the vertical support beams as well, if the horizontal beams aren't supported every within 5 blocks then you just have a useless piece of wood on the ceiling

So from a side view your mines should look something like this

|==========|

This leaves you with a max of 10 horizontal supports between vertical supports.. But mining past that 5th horizontal support you are risking a collapse so a safer way would simply be this

|=====|=====|

Edit: And yes vertical beams need to touch the ground or be supported themselves, they can't float in the air
