      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sugar cane and temperature

6 posts in this topic

Headed south during my first winter (my house is at -12500 latitude) . I waited until my crops started popping from the ground to dig up the garden and head out looking for sugar cane.  Many days later I found it (and a fruit tree!!!!) .  It was still deep winter when I returned and tried planting some of the sugar cane.  Not only did it plant but it survived the night so I thought I was good.  A bit later, I noticed that it wasn't there anymore and when I got close I picked up more than I had planted.

TL:DR

Summary:  planted one sugar cane in cold weather, picked up 2 after it naturally broke.

Question:  does sugar cane only pop out of ground when it grows or is there some other factor that I'm missing?

btw, sorry if it seems I'm spamming the forums lately but I'm fairly new to TFC with lots of questions and enthusiasm. :)

It looks to me that TFC adds a custom version of Reeds, but the only major differences is that TFC reeds are compatible with TFC dirt, sand, and water. It does not look like TFC reeds use any of the climate logic of crops or berrybushes.

I'm not sure why your reeds uprooted themselves.

I think what probably happened is that the water froze, causing the sugar cane to drop (just like in vanilla).

That's the vanilla behavior, where the sugarcane requires is a non-ice water block nearby. It only checks when you plant the sugar, and when the block updates, which happens each time it grows.

I would suspect that that's the case as well. Put some torches among your sugar canes and near the water to (hopefully) prevent it from freezing and see if there's any difference.

Thanks for all the replies.  To maintain immersion, I'll just wait until spring and plant the cane along with the rest of my crops.  Can't wait until body temp is introduced so winter is really a challenge.
