ATTENTION Forum Database Breach 03/04/2019
There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again. -
This forum is now READ ONLY! 01/20/2020
As of this post and forever into the future this forum has been put into READ ONLY MODE. There will be no new posts! A replacement is coming SoonTM . If you wish to stay up-to-date on whats going on or post your content. Please use the Discord or Sub-Reddit until the new forums are running.
Any questions or comments can be directed to Claycorp on either platform.

I would caution you that Terrafirmacraft is believable not realistic, and while it can give you a feel for how towns worked and may be a good supplemental resource it is by no means a substitute for proper research. If you tell your teacher the community you put yourself into consisted of 5 people you might not get a great grade.

I think scouring the world for a particular fruit tree is a bit too difficult for something as seemingly important as lanterns, but alcohol is way too easy. I'd like to see a crop-based alternative like corn
or soybean oil(I neglected to research the process, its pretty obviously outside the scope of tfc), with a worse ratio of food input to oil output, so that olive oil is the preferred solution but an alternative is at least possibleedit: I can't believe I didn't think about it when I first replied, but animals could drop some fat in addition to meat bone and hide, and the fat could be turned into oil. That would be way less sustainable than olive oil but far more widely obtainable, which is a nice balance

You can get away with vertical supports every 8 blocks by temporarily placing supports at the 4th block and removing them when the next support is in place, since supports give support 4 blocks in each direction

If you are using the new B79, charcoal pits changed, you no longer use a fire pit at all, replace the firepit with another log pile, and instead drop a torch on the pile, and when a fire starts finish covering the pile

I have been playing single player and I can say I don't eat, and i dont use smoothed blocks for the reasons you stated, but I do use torches instead of pumpkins because lighting them is trivial and they look nice, and I've used 10x as many support beams as i ever used in 78, the new behavior is awesome imo. I also use a lot less thatch now that its not a magic wall. i use dirt charcoal pits instead of rooms now as well

I would like to think that if youd left both recipes and made them make the same object there would be less confusion, but then again people would probably be reporting "horizontal support recipe makes vertical supports" 'bugs'

I actually really like the fact that cave-ins propogate into supported areas, it means you cant just build a cheap safe-zone with a few supports and then mine from there, you have to support your whole mine to really be safe, and that makes mining much more interesting than it ever was before. My mines look like mines, and by necessity. That is really cool imo

you wait till it says "oh, a bite!" and reel in until it says "the line is about to snap" pretty self explainatory if you are patient enough to ever see it happen in the first place

I fed and got wool from my sheep in 7.6, i think 3 or 4 days is how long it took to be able to shear them, but it worked for me on the current version, so idk

I noticed a bread image on my food prep surface but all the slots were empty so i clicked each one until i found something: a piece of bread with no weight value and -43.8 decay

I've been playing TFC for quite a while, and I feel like I should stop watching and start contributing to bringing the wiki up to date

I think sequoia saplings spawn in sequioa forests sometimes, but they might only grow there, you probably cant spawn them and get them to grow

I don't want creepers spawning in my yard either, and right now they don't because spawn protection mechanics work just fine. Replacing that mechanic with an only-on-natural-blocks system would be clear and obvious step backwards.
I really like the new torch mechanic as it is. My home is always safe because spawn protection works very well, my mines are dangerous, but easy to relight so you can at least see, a long-term light source requiring metal would be a nice addition, but I don't think spawning needs to change as a result of torches changing

I was doing the math in class and the amount of food needed for animals did seem excessive but my guesses might have been off. also, you feed animals by shift+right clicking, not just right clicking

I have been playing TFC since charcoal pits dropped items, so I know how to prospect. But in B79 I keep finding nuggets on the surface, digging down, and finding a mineral and not a trace of the metal I found. I can't find sphalerite because the 4 places i have found clusters of nuggets on the ground I dug down and found kaolinite, or lignite, or bituminous coal, but never even traces of sphalerite. I had the same problem with tetrahedrite but I eventually did find a location with an actual vein.
So what is going on? Is there an actual vein deeper down? is a bug causing nuggets to see metal when there is really a mineral? Has anyone else even had this problem?
Edit: ha, I'm an idiot, sphalerite doesnt even spawn in the rock layer i found the nuggets on top of, the vein was at the top of the second layer

I sat and fished for less than half a day and went from getting 0.5 oz fish to getting 3 oz fish in that time using less than one rod. butchery takes some practice to be useful but it goes up fairly quick when you actually sit down and do it, and one rod lasts plenty long enough

you no longer use a fire pit, you just build the mass of wood, cover all but one spot drop (q button, not right click) a torch on the open spot, wait for it to catch fire, then cover that spot too

Don't know why that didn't occur to me to do even though i read you could. I assume the trade-off is you only get 1 torch per stick that way instead of the usual 2?

Kitty said in another thread vinegar requires fruit to be sealed with the alcohol, but somehow that missed documentation. Also, I too have found that no sandwiches I make do anything for my nutrient bars. If i eat the ingredients they work but an assembled sandwich i dont.

Plants are based roughly on real life plants. Sugarcane grows in tropical and very warm temperate climates. If you get snow even once in an average winter IRL you are probably too far north for sugarcane to be happy. that said, this is a game, so looser restrictions can be fine if they improve gameplay, but ultimately you dont need sugar, so i dont know.

I got my sheep shearable in only a few days and breeding not all that long after, used less than 160oz for two sheep in total, havent tried other animals. sheep also seem to prevent me from overfeeding them

To brew alcohol, put a full 10 buckets of fresh water in a barrel, add a full 160 oz of apple, potato, sugarcane, or any grain *flour* and seal. to make vinegar add fruit to alcohol and reseal

Changelog said armor stands were rewritten and reenabled, but I can't craft them, and NEI doesn't have any recipe for them.

I stand corrected! It seemed like my sheep were eating as much as i could feed them rather than just eating once a day, so i assumed they had the same problem, but i tried again and they work correctly

Cool! I have not had a lot of teachers who would be that flexible (a surprising number of them said flat out they did not believe games could be used to teach anything). I can't really help you since I play single player but I wish you good luck!
