      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  1. Smithing question

    Thanks!
  2. Smithing question

I've been under the impression that the durability of a tool head made with smithing was based on how many actions were taken at the anvil, so you wanted to find the minimum number of actions necessary to fulfill all the requirements -- both the ones listed to the right, and getting the slider to line up. But today, two things happened that made me question my understanding: 1) I made my first sword blade, and it came out with 0 damage. (I hadn't thought that was possible.) 2) In my first attempt at making a saw blade, I realized on the next-to-last hit that my guesstimated method for fulfilling the hit requirements would put me quite a bit too far to the left. I went ahead and did the last hit anyway... and got a saw blade with about 80% health. So is it that you don't have to get the markers to line up exactly, they just need to be near-ish eachother when the requirements to the right are satisfied, and the tool durability is based on how closely they line up? Does the number of times you work the metal factor in to the durability at all, or just the slider?
  3. Gauging gestation

Perhaps starting with the second trimester, checking an animal's sex should also inform you if they are gravid? A "bulging" model for the last trimester, or the latter part of it, would also be neat.
  4. Getting the starter metals

Nope, but you can make a copper anvil using a stone anvil. (In fact you have to at some point.) Only problem is that if you're doing that from nuggets, you need 224 nuggets and a whole lot of patience at the firepit.
  5. B47 Biome Distribution

How far have you traveled? I'm about 1.5 km west of spawn, though I zigged and zagged a lot so I probably covered a distance closer to 3. How many biome transitions have you seen? Are you maybe in one giant plains biome? Plains can have forest as its sub-biome, similar to how hills sub-biomes work. Those forests are usually pretty small, like maybe 10-15 chunks. I have on rare occasion seen a vanilla biome that was more than 3km/side, so if TFC uses similar biome distribution code, you could be in something like that.
  6. B47 Biome Distribution

As I understand it, the very definition of a "Forest1" biome changes depending on the seed. For instance, in my last world, Forest1 had surface diorite over basalt, with Sycamore, Maple, and White Cedar. In my current world, Forest1 has surface Slate with White Cedar, Chestnut, Spruce, Douglas Fir. (No idea what's below that as I still don't have a pick.) I don't know of any weighting of certain biomes over others. I would guess that's just reading patterns into small random data. In my time in my first world I saw a total of 13 biomes, and 14 so far on my current world.
  7. How do you feel about new charcoal mechanic?

A fuller charcoal pit did indeed solve my problems. I went with 3x2x3 (17 log piles). Oddly, though, my charcoal pit was still smoking at 18 hours. Afraid to interrupt it too soon, I got on the roof and started running and jumping all over it; it wasn't until about 24 hours that it stopped smoking and very quickly collapsed underneath me.
  8. Removing all the common enemies, perhaps replacing them with wild animals, and possibly adding in several powerful/weird/rare monsters does sound like a good fit. In order for the weird stuff to stay weird, though, it would have to be quite rare indeed -- perhaps tied to certain seasons, biomes, etc in addition to being an uncommon spawn. Edit: I believe the genre term is "low fantasy" -- mostly realistic with a few fantastical elements.
  9. Thoughts on B47 ?

Theory: For a given location, a sluice box can only ever find one type of ore, no matter how many ores are in range. This is based on my results with 9 sluice boxes. Does anyone have any contradictory experience? (My 9 sluices were clustered in groups of 3/1/4/1, due to rock and water levels. Within a cluster, all sluices found the same type of ore, but I don't feel I have enough data points to make any claims about that.)
  10. How do you feel about new charcoal mechanic?

Thank you! I couldn't figure out why my charcoal pit wasn't working, I'll try that.
  11. Calendar time in single player

Apologies, I did not see the search box.
  12. Thoughts on B47 ?

I've noticed that the majority of the surface bits of ore I've found have come from rocks that (according to the wiki) can't actually contain that type of ore. In fact, I think the only surface ore I've found that that did come from a legal rock was bismuthinite. Is the list on the wiki out-of-date? Are these rocks pulling ore samples from the second stone layer?
  13. Calendar time in single player

I'm not sure that I'll ever even get to winter, otherwise. That takes something like 96 hours of actively playing the same world without a patch coming out that changes worldgen. (I've never seen anything other than spring.) While I agree, that's how it already works in minecraft. If a world is loaded, but no one is near some crops or saplings to keep their chunk loaded, they don't grow.I suppose each individual chunk could have a timestamp of when it was last simulated, and accelerated growth could occur whenever a chunk is loaded, regardless of whether it's caused by the world being loaded, or a player travelling within the world. While I'd appreciate that, it would certainly be more complicated.
  14. As I understand it, the reason that animal gestation, fruit trees, etc "work" in multiplayer is that the calendar advances regardless of whether anyone is logged in. To allow for a similar experience in single-player, I suggest a config file option that causes the game to check the timestamp on world load vs. when it was last saved, and advances the game calendar by an appropriate number of days. Nothing would grow during this time -- no ticks would pass -- but gestation could finish and fruit trees could come into season the next time those things are checked. (ie, next tick, next midnight/dawn, etc) As a further enhancement, the parameter could be a multiplier -- for example, set it to 0.125, and time will pass 8x slower when the game is closed than when the world is active.
  15. Thoughts on B47 ?

I did eventually get a pair of copper nuggets from the sluice, so I think having it in the Ocean biome is allowed, and I'm just having bad luck. Yeah, I think I should pack up everything and go traveling until I find either a nice river, or at least a forest biome with ponds above sea level.
