      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Stones and Biomes

3 posts in this topic

I've been playing for about a week on build 44b, and I've yet to find any starter ores. The biome I spawned in had Diorite at ground level, so I dug/tapped through that a bunch before learning that there is little-to-no ore above 130. Since then I've done exploratory mines in 13 different biomes, plus a few minutes in creative.

I've been operating under the assumption that within a given named biome (eg "Forest1") the stone will be the same throughout for any given y-value, +/- a few where the transitions are. My observations support that so far; is that correct?

I've noticed that within a biome, there is usually a stone transition at about y=135, +/- 5. This means that checking the surface stone type is pretty worthless, right? It will almost always change before you get deep enough for ores. (Unless there is some pattern to what the second stone will be based on the first stone?) I did find a biome where the transition didn't happen until 97, but it wasn't a useful rock on either side.

After the 13th biome with still no igneous intrusive rocks below 135, I got frustrated and started a creative world specifically to figure out what stones are in what biomes. I spawned in the middle of a Forest1 again, punched downwards, and was surprised to find completely different stone than in my survival world. Are the very definitions of the biomes randomly determined from the seed? That would explain why I haven't seen any guides about which stones correspond to which biomes, certainly. But if so, is a Forest1 at least consistent throughout a single world?

After the first few mines, my method evolved to:

1) Find two new biomes

2) Dig a staircase at the seam between biomes

3) Stop once I have seen both biomes transition to the second stone

Do I need to dig further to have any chance of finding igneous intrusive rocks below 130? (ie, the second layer is never of that type?)

Do the later stone transitions follow the same pattern of generally being at about the same height +/- 5 in each biome?

stone types are randomized for each biome on world gen(in one world all biomes of the same type have the same stone layers)

stone layers have no set generation pattern, either, they can occur in any order for any biome

Also, if you, or anyone else reads this in search of finding ore, digging downward to find ore isn't necessary any more, and is usually harder than the 'natural' way. If you make a (few) prospector's pic(s) and find a stone 'biome' that contains the ore you are looking for, start in one location and use the pic every seven to fourteen blocks (in one direction), then go back and do it again down another fourteen to twenty blocks to either side. Usually you will find something, and it's just a matter of mapping out the actual location of the 'found traces of...'

It's more difficult than just digging and hitting ore, it's harder than finding caves and finding ore in the walls (with near guarantee), but it's the 'correct' way to find ore in this game. I find it entertaining that there is no real tutorial on how to use the prospector's pic, since so few people seem to understand it (I only learned because I watched all the videos in "spotter's guide"
