      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Fire-setting: Stone-age Mining

4 posts in this topic

Now that we no longer have access to stone pick-axes (frustrating perhaps, but definitely logical), the hole left could be filled with the ancient method of fire-setting.

In it's essence, fire-setting is heating rock, then rapidly cooling it, making it fracture. (There is some historical debate about this, but do we really care for this mod?)

I would suggest building a fire-pit and getting it up to a certain temperature (perhaps using hickory/maple) and then dumping a bucket of water on it. This would break a given radius of stone around the fire-pit. (I was thinking the blocks adjacent to, and above the firepit)

Let me know what you all think!

I wouldn't say there was much historical debate about fire setting ?

To the best of my knowledge, it is well referenced in period texts which refer to mining ?

(and it's not really that stone age, the Romans used fire setting to mine)

I really like the idea, but I feel like it is a bit unnecessary.

The only way it would make sense was if realistic mining was implemented, and the use of picks to mine was altered. As I'm sure you all know, attacking a solid rock face with a pickaxe is not how people really mined.

I think it would add more tedium than it is worth perhaps ?

The contention between historians is whether or not the water itself actually helped crack the rock, or if it was just the fire.

I was thinking it would be useful for when you find exposed ore deposits during the stone age and need a way to mine it, as well as a way to obtain some extra stone.

And, it would only need more behind the scenes coding and would not require new blocks/items.

i ve used the modern version of "fire setting" to open up faulted mineral veins while prospecting

its really effective on already weathered rock though it still does damage to hold rock faces.

i don t really think we need this for TFcraft, perhaps if mining became much more difficult than i would want this.
