      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

My house and primary mine are situated above Claystone / Granite / Rock Salt. According to the wiki, possible ores include Galena, Gold, and Silver in Granite, as well as Magnetite and Tetrahedrite in all three layers.

After many hours over a few days of exploratory mining I was unable to locate any of these ores. I got fed up and decided to ruin my save by using NEI creative mode and CJB's Xray to locate ore veins just to see if maybe I was doing something wrong. It took me still another hour at least before I located any native copper, and it was in a different set of rock layers entirely. The rock layers underneath my spawn area are completely devoid of any copper, making it impossible to ever progress beyond Tier 0 had I assumed there should be copper somewhere in there.

My question stands as such; is this unlucky? Or expected given the layers of rock I had available? Are there certain rock layers more likely to spawn different veins of ore? If that is the case, is there a list somewhere that gives likelihoods of ores spawning in different layers of rock?

Your problem is you read the wiki to get game advice.

stone types are absolutely not an indicator of what IS in an area, the only way you can know that is finding a vein or breaking rocks on the surface and getting small ores.

the small ore types are most commonly caseterite, copper, and sphalerite, so if you're in an area and you don't get any of those from breaking rocks, move, there's likely ore somewhere, but not closer enough to the surface to be of any use.

You move until you find the copper is my advice, if you haven't got any there there might not be any.

Bioxx is very much against having numbers posted, but you don't need them, all you need to know is, Sometimes travel is neccessary.

We'll be getting horses and carts eventually, in the meantime you may want to build a road, or move what you can to wherever you can find copper.

If you're playing SMP this is nowhere near a problem given the way people explode in all directions, but ssp players have a more difficult time.
