      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Is rock tool durability still different?

7 posts in this topic

I read that different rock types improve tool durability, and made a small test. Made a knife out of dolomite and another from rhyolite (worst and best respectively). Then I farmed straw until they broke.

The dolomite knife gave me 66 straw. The rhyolite gave me 69. Some points were lost when I accidentally knifed stones.

Yes there is still a difference in tool durability for stone tools that account for different stone types (Shovels, Axes and Hoes). However, I believe that both the knife and the hammer do not account for stone types due to the fact that the were added later to the game for simplicity reasons.

Ok that makes sense.I had an opportunity to test stone axes while I was tearing down my old wooden house one block at a time. The dolomite axe chopped 50 blocks, while the rhyolite axe gave me 70. Not only that, but the first one needed like 1.5 seconds more for each block.I think that this difference should be mentioned in more detail on the wiki, because these are completely different tiers of items :o

Considering the difference in durability between a stone tool and a copper one, 20 blocks isn't really enough of a difference to consider it a different tier.

I had heard something about this on an older lets play but thought it was no longer in the game because I didn't see it on the wiki.

Really? On the Knapping page: http://terrafirmacraft.com/wiki/Knapping

Some types of stone will result in more durable stone tools than others. This is not immediately apparent, as all stone tool icons look the same.

In order of increasing durability: Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous Intrusive, Igneous Extrusive.

Stone tool heads are made by knapping two rocks together. The durability of the resulting tool is dependent on the hardness of the stone used to create it. From softest to hardest: Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous Intrusive, Igneous Extrusive. Note: Not all tools can be made out of stone.
