      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

      There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
      If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
      I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Where to find saltrocks?

I've been thousands of blocks in all directions and haven't ran into them yet. Are they suppose to be a rare item?

Rock Salt is one of 21 different stone types. As it is a sedimentary stone, it can only be found in the top layer. In the top layer, every single stone has an equal chance of being chosen, meaning that when you come across a new surface stone layer, there is a 1 in 21, or just under 5% chance that it is chosen. This chance is the exact same for every single stone type being chosen for the surface layer. It is entirely random, and there is honestly nothing you can do to increase your chances of finding rock salt other than to just keep exploring. Keep in mind that it is not uncommon in TFC to travel a minimum of 10,000 blocks in one direction to find a single material.

Is there a uniform distribution of size or is this like vanilla biomes (varying in size and shape in pseudo-random ways)?

 

Also do 'top layers' occur within shallow/deep oceans (if you're really desperate)?

They vary in size and shape in pseudo-random ways.

 

Top layers occur everywhere. The thickness of the top layer is dependant on the terrain though, so it's much thinner in ocean biomes.
