      ATTENTION Forum Database Breach   03/04/2019

There has been a breach of our database. Please make sure you change your password (use a password manager, like Lastpass).
If you used this password anywhere else, change that too! The passwords themselves are stored hashed, but may old accounts still had old, insecure (by today's standards) hashes from back when they where created. This means they can be "cracked" more easily. Other leaked information includes: email, IP, account name.
I'm trying my best to find out more and keep everyone up to date. Discord (http://invite.gg/TerraFirmaCraft) is the best option for up to date news and questions. I'm sorry for this, but the damage has been done. All I can do is try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

subsidence with mining...

10 posts in this topic

Hey all... So i started to try to mine today for the first time.I dug a hole straight down 8 blocks deep, 2 wide, 5 wide. I put a support beam up, across the area I was going to begin tunneling in, 3 high, 5 across. I tunneled back in 4 squares, and put up another beam... now past this, when I dig out a square, the blocks above it continue to cave in as I dig them out... Are supports buggy, or am I doing something wrong?

Support beams are used to prevent a cave in, but it doesn't mean it'll keep the blocks up 100% of the time. Are the support beams breaking as the cave comes down?

Nope, not always.. though the beam placement is not what I thoguht it would be... I am not certain if I am doing something wrong, or if they are just tricky. like my first beam placement would be as follows X---X. X being the columns, the - being the beam.  If I tunnel in 3 or 4 blocks in, and put another column in to match those, they dont seem to want to connect to my first beam structure.  They are in alignment with the first.. not sure what I am doing incorrectly... it shouldnt be hard, but I am obviously missing something.

yeah, that is what I was trying to do.. but it was not always placing the cross braces. I was having to cut the support down, and rebuild it multiple times to get it to connect both ways...

X---X was no problem

Sorry for the crude diagrams, and poor verbiage, tryin my best to make sense.

Hmmm... The |, or vertical beams, seem to be too long if anything. If that doesn't work, I've got nothing

Just to make sure, the blocks that are falling are cobblestone, correct? Support beams aren't going to help you with stopping gravel or dirt from falling down.

Screenshots of how your beams are set up are also going to be a lot more helpful than text diagrams.

Support beams do stop dirt, but not gravel. Tested while extending my bunker/workshop. I was pretty shocked/surprised/disappointed when gravel fell down :( was pretty happy about the dirt though! I really didn't fancy digging it all out to then put it all back again!

Support beams do not stop dirt consistently, and the dirt will behave very weirdly. It is planned to make dirt behave the same way that gravel does (falls right through), but we haven't gotten around to making the change yet.
